Season opener comes with warm fuzzies

anything for some good PRAwww – “When UTC hosts App State in the season opener for both teams, both teams will have a “GC” decal on their helmets. All SoCon teams will wear the sticker, commissioner John Iamarino said, as a show of support for all the people along the Gulf Coast affected by the BP oil spill.”

Don’t get me wrong, I feel for the gulf coast….but that’s just odd

Comment by Alex 07.28.10 @ 9:17 am

What the …….???????

Comment by StuckinLodi 07.28.10 @ 9:22 am

Yeah it is. Georgia Southern and Samford are our closest schools to the gulf, and they’re not exactly close.

Comment by Dan 07.28.10 @ 9:22 am

BP paying for the decals?

Comment by appfantoo 07.28.10 @ 9:35 am

What the …..? Did an important member of the Socon family die because of this ordeal?

Comment by herbstreitsucks 07.28.10 @ 9:36 am

What if we put a sticker on that says AZ for all the citizens and border folks being killed while illegals run wild.

Comment by herbstreitsucks 07.28.10 @ 9:37 am

Agree, this just seems very odd.

Comment by App-solute 07.28.10 @ 9:39 am

i also feel for Gulf Coast, but no SoCon school is near gulf with exception of Samford, and even then it’s miles away. strangeness…def. agree with herstreitsucks! we should be supporting AZ not GC

Comment by appaneer420 07.28.10 @ 9:43 am

You use their product right?

Comment by JMcCray 07.28.10 @ 9:48 am

When do we get our Haiti and Darfur stickers? How about the floods in Iowa? We once played Iowa…should we not honor them as well?

I would prefer to see us honor our soldiers overseas with some form of a decal. Namely the Appalachian State alumni who have given their lives in either the military or law enforcement.

Comment by Jamey 07.28.10 @ 9:49 am

I assume the secondary will be sporting ‘JT’ stickers this year.

Comment by Dan 07.28.10 @ 9:52 am

This gesture rings about as hollow as as a rotten oak tree. If the teams had spent some time helping out in the gulf, that would be a diffent story.

Just seems like a political ploy to suggest that the government is doing their job down there…which they haven’t. INSANE CLOWN POSSE drops the ball once again.

Comment by appfanmidwest 07.28.10 @ 9:57 am

What Jamey said!!
I think the Comish has flipped his lid

Comment by bcoach 07.28.10 @ 10:00 am

Hans Batishon is of Hatian decent. Why don’t we have a sticker for him? Another reason to leave the SoCon……..

Comment by Big Dave 07.28.10 @ 10:14 am

This is a joke right?

Comment by ceez 07.28.10 @ 10:16 am

I think this is reason enough to switch conferences maybe divisions. It appears we are being lead by a goat.

Comment by asu7 07.28.10 @ 10:16 am

I mean will we also have a moment of silence? Will part of ticket sales go towards the recovery down there?

Comment by ceez 07.28.10 @ 10:18 am

ceez,

GREAT POINT! If we care so much about the gulf, then why don’t give a portion of sales to the cleanup? Why don’t we all cancel one game and go down there and clean up.

This is nothing more than empty, hollow, BS political correctness.

What about the soldier in Afghanistan losing their lives in a war that we can’t win being funded by money we are borrowing from the Chinese?

Comment by MIDWEST 07.28.10 @ 10:22 am

Ironically I bet the stickers are petroleum based

Comment by nomadb 07.28.10 @ 10:29 am

It’s exactly what the title of the post states, “Warm Fuzzies.” I think it would be a great idea to have the teams rotate duties in the Gulf States or donate a portion of the game profits where the teams wear the decals.

Otherwise it amounts to advertisement (which isn’t a terrible thing).

Comment by JMcCray 07.28.10 @ 10:36 am

“Just seems like a political ploy to suggest that the government is doing their job down there…which they haven’t. INSANE CLOWN POSSE drops the ball once again.”

Uh, I think it’s as dumb an idea as anyone else, but I must have missed the part where Obama mandated that the SoCon wear these stickers to make him look good.

Comment by robc 07.28.10 @ 10:52 am

Come on robc, read between the lines! Way, way between the lines. Where no one would even think to look for context…

Comment by Dan 07.28.10 @ 11:05 am

Los Mountaineers

Comment by herbstreitsucks 07.28.10 @ 11:06 am

Administrators at publicly funded institutions are encouraged to tow the line. That was my point.

It’s a stupid idea if no one is putting their money or sweat where their mouth is.

Comment by appfanmidwest 07.28.10 @ 11:22 am

Herbstreit

You win the award for most clever post so far on this thread. That actually made me chuckle.

Comment by ceez 07.28.10 @ 11:35 am

We should leave the conf, go FBS, and then have a sticker for all the bowl games in rememberance of all the fools that paid money to see meaningless games.

Comment by biggie 07.28.10 @ 11:40 am

this is stupid….Los Mountaineers….classic comment…I even saw Los Marlins on the Florida Marlins jerseys the other nite….what next?…folks, we’re losing the ship

Comment by crzyfrnk 07.28.10 @ 1:16 pm

The reason given was because of the significant number of players in SoCon who hail from the states affected by the spill. I’m not sure the point, but nonetheless that was the reason given. According to what I’ve read it was Lembo who made the suggestion.

Comment by hapapp 07.28.10 @ 1:18 pm

I had no idea the Gulf Coast was in the SoCon footprint.

Comment by NK 07.28.10 @ 2:33 pm

What kind of idea is that Lembo? Maybe instead of having his players practice going for the knees of the best quarterback in the league, he should have his D-line and linebackers go and clean the spill themselves this summer.

Idiot.

Comment by The Future 07.28.10 @ 2:45 pm

What about removing the SoCon decals to make room for the GC decals? Most people will think that GC stands for the newest member of the SoCon, Georgia College and State University located in Milledgeville, Georgia with 6,000 students. We are going after big schools with this new recruit. Well big in contrast to most members of the SoCon. They don’t have a football team but might start up one sometime. They do have a strong basketball team, but have to play their games at the Y. The court rolls out above the pool and they can’t use the court if the AARP is having Senior Day at the pool.

Comment by App in Greenwood 07.28.10 @ 3:11 pm

My pet frog died can we wear stickers for that too?

O wait I think I might have just stepped on a bug. Maybe we can name a game after it.

Heck lets just wear ccc stickers since their program is dieing.

Comment by asu7 07.28.10 @ 3:40 pm

I’m going to the SoCon website and suggest they go pound sand……..

Comment by Big Dave 07.28.10 @ 3:51 pm

Please tell me you’re kidding about Georgia College joining the SoCon?? God, get us the hell out of this dog pound…

Comment by appfanmidwest 07.28.10 @ 4:22 pm

I caused the oil spill.

Comment by clayton 07.28.10 @ 5:29 pm

Clayton,
You will never get a sticker that way.

Comment by bcoach 07.28.10 @ 6:35 pm

Just joking but expect someone just as bad in the near future as the conference continues to compete with smaller conferences such as Big South

Comment by app in greenwood sc 07.28.10 @ 6:40 pm

Like Presbyterian probably. total joke.
