In talking the latest scandal(?), Mike & Mike touched on players getting paid. Golic ain’t having it – “Stop with the poor player stuff at the big-time Division I schools.” He says students game the system, but doesn’t acknowledge those games are more lucrative at big schools. Unfair advantage?
If you pay amatuer athletes, then you cant call them amatuers.
Comment by C 07.23.10 @ 5:28 pmEvery college or university should run a Summer sports camp for kids. Players who want to earn some extra money can apply for a university-sponsored camp job that is limited to 4-6 weeks per year and $10/hour. Helps kids and puts a little extra coin in the pockets of players. Maybe they learn a few lessons about leadership and mentoring along the way.
My 7 year old just attended a sports camp sponsored by a small, private college. Kids can major in one sport and minor in two. They also do a lot of team building and character building excercese and events.
Day 1 of my kids football journal (his major, of course): “I want to go home”
Day 4: “I wanted to go do something else besides football, but I disciplined myself and now I’m glad.”
Not a bad lesson for a 7 year old.

Comment by MIDWEST 07.23.10 @ 6:04 pmPoor kids. Free education, free tutors, free meals, free housing, free professional coaching, free professional trainers, free professional strength conditioning coaches, free PR department, and free trips all across the country. Yea, I can see where they don’t get nearly enough for their efforts on the courts and playing fields and need additional compensation.

I’m shocked that so many people are disappointed in His Majesty and his Czars…….didn’t they read his resume???
But I have to say I love Joe B…….some of the best gaffs in history! He makes Dan Quayle look smart!….I love the one about that three letter word…JOBS!!!….lol…almost as good as His Majesty bragging during the campaign that they have visited “about 57 states”…lol….
Comment by appfanAl 07.23.10 @ 6:43 pmSomething seems inherently wrong with politicians campaigning for themselves (or their party) with our tax dollars to keep themselves in office.
Besides, they are spending time, paid time with our money, campaigning instead of governing.
It’s time for a major overhaul. Throw all of them out and start over.
Comment by MIDWEST 07.23.10 @ 7:17 pmI’m going out on a limb and saying that this comment validates GW Bush’s comment about N. Korea being part of “the axis of evil.” I’m just saying…
This situation may cause Obama and Hillary to go separate ways.
Comment by MIDWEST 07.23.10 @ 8:47 pm“It’s time for a major overhaul. Throw all of them out and start over.”
That will not fix the idiots that elected “them” in the first place. That is the real problem. There are countless numbers of pathetic, self serving, so-called politicians waiting to take “their” place. And the idiots that voted them in are breeding like rabbits, growing in numbers….
Comment by Bear 07.23.10 @ 9:02 pmWhy does every thread get hijacked by Midwest’s incessant raving?
Comment by hapapp 07.23.10 @ 10:21 pmBear- well said
hapapp- my job is to stimulate debate and to call out the corrupt, radical, and misguided administration that is destroying our country. Insane Clown Posse has got to be stopped, for the sake of future generations. Frankly, it will take us 20 years to dig out from this crap, but we can salvage it for our kids.
Comment by MIDWEST 07.23.10 @ 10:40 pmMidwest, If your job is to call out the corrupt yada, yada, yada, then maybe you’d be more successful by starting your own blog. I doubt even the conservatives on this board — one aimed specifically toward Appalachian athletics — would miss you.
Comment by AppGrad78 07.23.10 @ 11:48 pmI hope UNC gets the same treatment as Southern Cal.Maybe with 30 less scholarships for the Tarholes then some of the UNC leaning kids would now consider coming to Boone.
Just a thought.
Fine, if you feel that is your mission in life. But, why do you burden us who come here for ASU discussion? I read plenty of political blogs but I come here for my dose of ASU talk. And if your doing it for mybenefit, it’s not working.
Comment by hapapp 07.24.10 @ 10:03 amappfan. please block Midwest’s ISP until he promises to keep to the discussion at hand.
Comment by nomadb 07.24.10 @ 10:41 amMidwest, although I do agree with you, this isn’t the pace for the political stuff. Like others I come here for a break from the world according to Obama.
Comment by AppMan 07.24.10 @ 11:15 amI’m just saying that people need to stand up and call this guy out like they did GW Bush. I’ll respect your requests and limit my King O slams to major blunders (which may be daily).
As for the Tarholes, I find it hilarious that their self-righteous attitude is finally catching up with them. Again, all those great athletes and they’re still afraid to play App. Miami of the Piedmont will soon be back to their state of football irrelevance. Their fans are already playing the “we’re a basketball school” card again. hahahha.
Now, let’s talk App defense. Any word on how Big Blinn (Blinn College transfer) is doing?
Comment by MIDWEST 07.24.10 @ 11:39 amYeah, MIDWEST… Republicans are fiscally conservative… easy to appear that way when you hide millions in debt. HA!
“The Republican National Committee failed to report more than $7 million in debt to the Federal Election Commission in recent months – a move that made its bottom line appear healthier than it is heading into the midterm elections and that also raises the prospect of a hefty fine.”

Comment by HB 07.24.10 @ 12:33 pmPlenty of people criticize Obama like they did Bush. I’m sure you tune into foxnews often Midwest. They can’t do a story without blaming Obama. Why should everyone blame obama like bush anyways? Is that the mature approach to take?
Comment by ceez 07.24.10 @ 12:34 pmWe may blame Obama. Fox may blame Obama. But Obama blames Bush.
As for North Carolina, we all knew that something stank when all of these high level recruits were lining up (and retracting commitments to other, higher lever, football schools) to go to a basketball school with little football tradition, short of LT.
Comment by Forth 07.24.10 @ 1:13 pm“Little football tradition?”
I’m no Carolina fan, but it is an extreme understatement to say Carolina has little football tradition “outside of LT.” Forth, certainly you’ve watched the Panthers a good bit this past decade. You haven’t forgotten that Mr. Julius Peppers, the Panthers’ outstanding (former) defensive end, went to UNC, as did a number of current NFL players.
I just find it all too lazy to say, “Oh, they’re a basketball school,” and essentially equate UNC football with the Duke program or the Indiana program. I see the UNC program as comparable to Purdue, UCLA, or Stanford. They might have a multi-year string of losing seasons but also have a multi-year string of winning seasons, too, and every once in a while they have a true standout year: UNC had one in ‘97 (11-1) & ‘96 (10-2); Purdue went to the Rose Bowl in the ‘01 season; UCLA went 10-2 in ‘98.
In other words, it shouldn’t shock us the next time any of those schools rise up to a top ten finish, and we shouldn’t assume cheating unless there’s true evidence.
Comment by Michael 07.24.10 @ 4:05 pmIf you ask me, former players like Golic carry a much more authoritative voice on subjects like this than any of us do.
Comment by Michael 07.24.10 @ 4:07 pmHB- I don’t think you want to go there with me. This administration is the most fiscally reckless in the history of our country.
Hmmm.. the Brits are decentralizing healthcare. Isn’t that ironic? INSANE CLOWN POSSE making mistakes that countries have already made and are trying to correct. I guess UPS and FEDEX are more efficient than the post office after all, mr. president.

Comment by MIDWEST 07.24.10 @ 8:18 pmHB-
Also, tell your liberal friend John Kerry to stop trying to raise our taxes while skipping town on his own. I’d say that he and his wife Theresa Ketchup can afford to pay their boat taxes. Typical liberal hypocrite.

Comment by MIDWEST 07.24.10 @ 8:26 pmThis site is becoming completely worthless as every posts is now filling up with Midwest’s insane political rants. WE get it Midwest, you despise the president. Your opinions on ASU athletics are bad enough but can you please spare us your political views. I’m not interested!!!
It would be different if this post were a political one. I could avoid it, but it’s not so in order to read reasonable comments I have to wade through the inane ones.
Comment by hapapp 07.25.10 @ 9:47 amI really wish we were having a scrimmage at Fan Fest this year…
Comment by Dan 07.25.10 @ 9:59 amMichael, I don’t define a tradition (see def. below) of excellence as producing an NFL Star every decade or two. I also don’t define it as tradition of a program when you have to go back a decade and a half to find two consecutive successful seasons.
I hear your reference to my laziness and raise you my suspicion of your non-affection for UNC. You’ve gone out of your way to advocate for their past as being defined as “tradition.”
“Tradition: 1. The passing down of elements of a culture from generation to generation, especially by oral communication.”
Now, I can see why UNC Fans might THINK they have tradition based on the def. above. But, just because it was passed down “orally” does not make it fact.
Comment by Forth 07.25.10 @ 10:56 amYou are now in “The Twilite Zone”

While I don’t think you can justify paying a student athlete a wage as if they’re another group of university employees, I do think it’s nonsense a school can sell a jersey without the player seeing anything.
Comment by clayton 07.26.10 @ 6:40 amMan football season really needs to start. We might have to get Dr. Phil in here or have an exorcism.
Comment by asu7 07.26.10 @ 8:02 amClayton
You bring up a great point but the other side of the coin is that they need to take advantage of every income potential. Even selling jerseys and so on the departments are loosing money. With that said if they don’t take advantage of every opportunity there will be no place for the players to play. Not sure what the real answer is.
I’m sure the AD’s justification is that the players’ names aren’t on the back of the jersey, so it’s not actually profiting off of them, per say.
Comment by Dan 07.26.10 @ 8:40 amMidwest,
First of all, this blog is dedicated to Appalachian sports. Period. We get enough politics via the other media outlets.
Second, you come across as nut job conservative. The majority of this country finds themselves somewhere in the middle. Therefore, most of us ignore you red in face, vein popping conservatives and the out of this world, gov’t loving liberals. So, shut the eff up. You’re obnoxious and no one takes you seriously. Because of this, I personally will never follow any political link you ever post. You really need to see a counselor about your TPS (tiny p*nis syndrome).

Comment by appfanAl 07.26.10 @ 12:52 pmI think it’s fair to say I’m still too young to understand that one.
Comment by Dan 07.26.10 @ 12:53 pmI am seriously worried about us. Do you think JM can at least let the coaches have a scrimmage to hold us over. I don’t think we are going to make it. I can’t imagine what this place will be like mid August.
