Alltime Upset effects continue to linger

THE HORROR! THE HORROR!Meet the Razorbacks’ QB – “I mean, I played App State at Michigan. I was part of that team. We got beat in the first game of the season. I kind of learned my lesson from that as far as overlooking people. We have to set the tone in the first game and keep building, keep progressing, keep getting better.”

I wonder if Ryan Mallet knows how many national championships App has won and who they played in those championships? No clue just like the rest of the country, but EVERYONE who watches football knows App beat Michigan.

I’m telling you guys, do not write off the Florida game. I guarantee you the line will be around 28 and I’ll take App all day long!

Comment by MIDWEST 07.22.10 @ 9:15 pm

Not sure what that has to do with anything… I guarantee he knows we won at least 2 national titles. They all knew going into the game that we were defending FCS champs, and I’ll bet they all knew when we won it that year too.

Comment by Dan 07.22.10 @ 9:47 pm

You really think our starters are going to play in that Florida game?

Comment by jonesy 07.22.10 @ 10:04 pm

I need to see our starting quarterback before I think about beating Florida

Comment by ceez 07.22.10 @ 10:18 pm

Ryan Mallet was a freshman for UM back in ‘07. I remember reading comments by Wolverine fans prior to the game that they couldn’t wait to see Mallet (and other underclassmen) play the entire second half so they could see the future after Henne & company. Mallet has played well since taking over for the Razoracks.

It’s amazing to look at some of the NFL players that an AE led ASU team beat. Flacco, Henne, Hightower, Thigpen, etc…

Comment by tim 07.23.10 @ 12:09 am

Hey man, AE is an NFL player himself… besides, it’s not about one guy, it’s about the whole team.

Comment by Dan 07.23.10 @ 5:10 am

Ryan Mallet is tall.

Comment by clayton 07.23.10 @ 5:51 am

Dan I never said AE beat them by himself, hence why I said an “AE led team”. I understand AE is a NFL player, but not many players from the FCS can claim that they’ve beaten so many NFL first stringers (or 1st string at some point).

Comment by tim 07.23.10 @ 8:19 am

Without a stronger rush defense than FCS 72nd, we don’t have a chance at Florida. I hope the line steps up this year.

Comment by 3-Star General 07.23.10 @ 8:25 am

If we do not play our starters and try our best to win this game, I will never attend another game again. That would be the biggest insult to our players and fans and would demonstrate that we are only in it for the money.

Jerry will play to win this game, just like he did at Michigan.

Comment by MIDWEST 07.23.10 @ 8:32 am

You hear that Jerry? If you bench the starters then MIDWEST is out for good. Make sure that factors into the gameplan.

Please excuse my sarcasm on this f’ing toasty Friday morning. The heat is frying my brain.

Comment by Jamey 07.23.10 @ 8:39 am

I am not willing to give up on the program, but I will be a little upset as well if we just go down there to collect the check and come home without working for the money.

Comment by ceez 07.23.10 @ 8:58 am

Jerry Moore will play to win this game. Unless it gets out of hand you will see the starters on the field.

Comment by AppMan 07.23.10 @ 8:59 am

Come on guys, we all know the black and gold has never strapped on their helmets with any intentions other than to win every game.

Comment by C 07.23.10 @ 9:07 am

I’ll worry about Florida when we wrap up a home seed for the playoffs…….Florida means nothing to me until then.

Comment by Big Dave 07.23.10 @ 9:09 am

The starters will play at least the first half and if we are in the game longer. If we’re down 4 touchdowns in the third quarter, it is time to get them out. I’m sure we will have different plans for different situations. The question isn’t if the starters play, but how long? The answer will depend on the game situation.

Comment by Keith 07.23.10 @ 9:14 am

Don’t forget about the expanded playoff field, that should make it easier to lock up a home game or two(or hopefully 3) heck – im happy just being in the playoffs. Also I really don’t think those deciding the playoff field will take into consideration what happens that game (assuming we lose by any margin)

Comment by Alex 07.23.10 @ 9:27 am

Grrr. I want alligator stew!

Comment by JMcCray 07.23.10 @ 9:37 am

I know tim, I didn’t mean that as a call out or anything.

As far as Florida goes… Beat UTC.

Comment by Dan 07.23.10 @ 9:40 am

Has anyone heard anything regarding our QB situation this season. I have heard from at least one former player that Jackson seems to have a lead in the QB competition, but that is really all that has been said. It seems odd to me that we have heard so little in regards to know will actually step into those HUGE (and excessively padded due to a lawnmower incident) shoes that Mr. Edwards has left behind.

Comment by Jamey 07.23.10 @ 9:46 am

Oh yeah, and please add me to the list of people who are saying:

Florida is a long way away…beat UTC.

Comment by Jamey 07.23.10 @ 9:46 am

I have also heard (via a current player) that Jackson is the favorite, but that was at the end of last season.

Comment by Dan 07.23.10 @ 9:58 am

I am really anxious to see how he plays this season and to see how Cadet has adjusted to the WR role. Even with his size issues I think he has the potential to be an explosive guy in the open field. Perhaps a Davon Fowlkes reincarnation.

Comment by Jamey 07.23.10 @ 10:07 am

Unless we see an amazingly improved Presley, I hope it is Jackson simply because that means we have a better option that what we have seen from DP in his two starts.
Cadet should be a good weapon but I see it more in the 2nd half. It may take a few games for him to get comfortable in the role.

Comment by Gwaltineer 07.23.10 @ 10:18 am

BEAT UTC!

Comment by A.Freeman 07.23.10 @ 10:21 am

As has been said above Florida is a long way away. Our next game is UTC and if we don’t win that one we may not have to worry about playoffs. No matter what position we are in we will try to beat Florida and to think otherwise is just plain nuts. Do you think we are unhappy about playing them last because we are going to start 3rd string? No it is because we are worried about injuries to first and second string players IF we make the playoffs because that is who will be on the field. To even suggest we would not try and beat ANY team we play is just plain insulting and very stupid. This schedule has presented a lot of problems opening in conference and ending with Florida. Let’s just worry about one game at a time and not have stupid thoughts about any player or coach not trying 100% to win EVERY game. You may not agree with a decision on any play or choice of player but any suggestion that we would not try and win a game really p me off.
If that thought enters your mind then do us all a favor and just stop going to games right now!!

Comment by bcoach 07.23.10 @ 10:47 am

RM and most players will remember their 1st college game….especially number 1 QB recruits.

UM’s fans , team and individual players were all in for a rude awaking in the big house that beautiful fall day.

AE was only in his 1st game of his Soph season as he showed UM’s defense how speed and precision, could crave up a big ten contender.

What a Game….What a Day

Comment by Pete 07.23.10 @ 11:10 am

Some of you people are too serious.

I’m just ready for football season. And yes, I want App to take the season one game at a time and have faith that that is exactly what the coaches are doing.

Jamey, I agree with you, I am eagerly waiting to see how Cadet transferred to WR, because I think he is going to make one heck of a Z – receiver.

Comment by JMcCray 07.23.10 @ 11:31 am

Just to lighten the mood for you J McCray, and since you were nice enough to agree with me.

I AGREE WITH ERIC.

Discuss (those of you who were in Boone around 2002-2004 will know what I am talking about)

Comment by Jamey 07.23.10 @ 12:13 pm

“Without a stronger rush defense than FCS 72nd, we don’t have a chance at Florida. I hope the line steps up this year.”

Rush defense was 47th last year…. not 72nd.

Comment by Skjellyfetti 07.23.10 @ 12:21 pm

I lived next to “Eric” my freshman year. Ah, memories….

Comment by Justin 07.23.10 @ 1:04 pm

i remember those shirts. took me about a month to figure out what it was all about. i was spending alittle to much time in the bars then. can someone remind me of what the story was.

Comment by Ry_ATO 07.23.10 @ 1:45 pm

Our Rush Defense hasn’t been what it was since 2006.

Comment by JMcCray 07.23.10 @ 2:23 pm

I don’t think we’ve heard much about the QB position because there is no way to know at this point. It boils down to who has the best camp. There would be nothing over the summer that would distinguish the one player from the other.

Comment by hapapp 07.23.10 @ 2:28 pm

I don’t see the Fowlkes/Cadet comparison. Cadet is bigger and is more “slippery” than “shifty” which is how I’d describe Fowlkes. Basically, a defender will get a hand on Cadet and he’ll slip away but, the same defender would never get the chance to touch Fowlkes.

Cadet should be good on WR screens like Fowlkes was but, I’d rather see Cadet take a wildcat snap than take a reverse or end-around.

Comment by clayton 07.23.10 @ 3:11 pm

My prediction is that the QB position is Presley’s to lose. We all know that Jerry likes to go with experience/tenure, even if Jackson may have a little more talent Notice I said it’s his to lose…which is a real possibility once Jackson gets some reps.

When you see B. Quick, Cadet, Cline, and Coco lined up at receiver, you have to be a little concerned…even if you’re the mighty gators.

Comment by MIDWEST 07.23.10 @ 4:01 pm

Those 4 WR’s are quick like little cheetahs. This is likely the fastest receiving corps we have ever had at ASU. If Jackson or Presley can get the ball downfield to them is it gonna be raining TD’s. And here is the scary part…if we have those 4 out wide then there is no way the defenses can stack the box to stop D-Moore.

Comment by Jamey 07.23.10 @ 4:46 pm

And if 6′4″ 250# Drew Bailey is an aggressive TE with good hands, that could turn into some great ATC yardage!

I just wish I was so optomistic about the Defense.

Comment by JMcCray 07.23.10 @ 5:27 pm

Let’s talk about the defense. Where do you guys see our biggest weakness this year? I hear that we are going to be more aggressive this year on the Dline. We also have Big Blinn to stop the run.

Comment by MIDWEST 07.23.10 @ 6:01 pm

Didn’t we turn over 50% of our starters up there?

Comment by Dan 07.23.10 @ 6:14 pm

I guess I’m less than 100 percent on the Defense because I haven’t heard much about them, they seem to be small upfront, and in the past the line has been a bit porous. The Secondary I am more positive about.

I guess I just haven’t heard anything other than here or over at goASU.

Comment by JMcCray 07.24.10 @ 6:56 am

I think 2006 shows that Moore will make a move, but tends to start with experience. Even last year he started DP but that was the last QB he played all year after Cadet played the 4th quarter. Even in Presley starts the first game and wins, which I expect him to do both, it does not mean that Presley will start all year. Jackson will get a shot.

Comment by Gwaltineer 07.24.10 @ 12:50 pm

Gwalt is correct. At times, it does seems that Jerry gets a little too reserved with the offense at the beginning of the season. I would have pulled DPresley earlier in the ECU game, but he knows more than I do, so I trust his judgement. My only 2 cents to Coach would be to better utilize the playmakers, regardless if they are freshmen or seniors.

I do think we’ll see a more aggressive Dline this year and also more blitzing. As for DP, I hear he is a different player than we saw at ECU. Apparently, the whole offense was out of sync at the beginning of the ECU game and DP kind of looked like a deer in the headlights.

All it takes is a few passes to BQuick, Cadet, Cline, or Coco, and it will open it up for DMoore. Man, I am PUMPED about the playmakers we have this season! It should be exciting to watch!

Comment by MIDWEST 07.25.10 @ 11:47 am

Late last year many of the key offensive players thought the new QB would be Jackson. In fact, they thought it was no contest. Could be he’s not as good as they thought but I’ll go with the guys who have been playing and practicing with both Presley and Jackson….I say it’s Jackson’s to loose.

Comment by Mike 07.25.10 @ 1:21 pm

Don’t count out the incoming freshman either, nobody knew Armanti would be Armanti in 2006.

Comment by Dan 07.25.10 @ 1:39 pm

Interesting perspective Mike. I think Jerry will go with DP because we don’t need a playmaker like Armanti this year with all the other guys we have. He’ll stick with the safe pick, which is probably DP, although I do expect Jackson to get plenty of playing time in the 3rd and 4th.

Comment by MIDWEST 07.25.10 @ 6:15 pm

If our rush defense improves we will be fine this year. Everything rests on 3 things this year … rush defense, schedule and QB play.

I am worried about UTC being the first game of the year and UF being the last before playoffs. We could easily beat ourselves in the first game and be back on the road for the playoffs. The selection folks will definitely use the UF game just as they used the ECU game. If we get beat by 30 or more at the Swamp and lose to UTC we do not get a seed. UM plays the scheduling game and we will make another trip out west if we lose to both UF and UTC. We have to win one of those games.

We need to take care of business and ensure we get a week off after the UF game as well.

Now if we get homefield and the week off then look out. The week off would be Thanksgiving so the ROCK would be packed that next week. That Thanksgiving week game is always low on attendance.

I still think this is our best team in years from top to bottom. The question is do we beat ourselves. We must stop the run this year.

I agree that our WRs with Moore makes the offense a bunch of loaded guns.

Comment by asu7 07.26.10 @ 8:29 am

Why are people worried about UTC, other than it being the first game of the season and they received votes for a preseason poll? A poll that placed App third in the nation and Elon 7th. I haven’t seen much in regards to their prospectus.

New video added to youtube from that day…enjoy.

College GameDay Predictions Prior to App State Michigan Game

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VT_yxI1G80Q

Fowler notes “Now Appalchian State is a good 1-AA team. They’ve won a couple championships. Well they have to visit the ‘Big House’.”

Herbstreit questions “So you’re giving them a chance in the ‘Big House’?”

Fowler “No”

Herbstriet predicts “Chad Henne could set a record today unless they take him out of the game. He’s got all his weapons back. Michigan will have the best offense, this year, in the Big 10, because of Hart running the football. Henne throwing. And also this is a team, I think, they keep talking about they’re on a mission, collectively. Well it starts today against ‘poor old Appalachian State’.”

Fowler “We will learn nothing about the Wolverines today”

Herbsriet “No”

Comment by Dave 07.26.10 @ 10:05 am

Less than 40 days till the season begins….with a little defense, and a quarterback that can get the ball to his weapons, we should be in for a great ride. So just sit back and enjoy it.

Comment by John C 07.26.10 @ 3:36 pm

JMcCray – the reason I am worried is they nearly beat us at our place last year. They are the most improved team in the Socon. The first game of the season is always iffy and this one happens to be a conference game against a foe that could beat us at their place.

Comment by asu7 07.26.10 @ 4:38 pm

Second year coach that turned them from a cellar dweller to a .500 team with a second year quarterback that transferred from a school in Knoxville. And what 7 said.

Comment by clayton 07.26.10 @ 4:46 pm

Yeah, but as far as last year’s game, it seemed some of their points were opportunistic and they made two on-side kicks.

Otherwise, I can understand the worries associated with the first game of the season and the coach items.

Comment by JMcCray 07.26.10 @ 5:12 pm

Qb- Jackson, Barnes and Presley.
Don’t underestimate Barnes, without the broken jaw – he was on his way to being a very big time recruit.

One of these QB’s is going to inherit a dream offense for a guy that can rise to the occasion and pass with skill.
