Tuesday a bunch of bankers got together to talk banking. The morning featured the chief executive of North Carolina on stage. Kinda cool – “Said she was pulling for Appalachian State last night (more basketball). “Everybody I pull for loses,” she says.” There’s a political joke there somewhere.
Dear god, here we go..

Comment by Dan 03.11.10 @ 4:25 pmShe was in Boone this week. She visited Samaritan’s Purse, so i’ve been told.
Comment by herbstreitsucks 03.11.10 @ 4:36 pmGood she likes App, sucks that I still can’t like her.
Comment by biggie 03.11.10 @ 4:39 pmI voted for her, but if she pulls for App and causes us to lose, she can forget being re-elected with my vote!
Comment by DRM 03.11.10 @ 4:59 pmHey Bev!… How about some legislation instructing the big boys to play us instead of the Va FCS schools.
There might be a vote in it for ya
Now there’s a thought!
Comment by DRM 03.11.10 @ 5:12 pmmaybe she will “pull” for Obamee in 2012
Comment by Dcocny 03.11.10 @ 6:48 pmShe is a moron. She calls herself the jobs governor while her state suffers 11.5% unemployment. By jobs governor I think she means that she stands around with her finger up her a$$ while she watches jobs leave the state at the speed of sound.
Dumbass!
The further she stays away form by beloved Appalachian the better. It is common knowledge that things in nature flow from areas of high concentration to low concentration. I am afraid that if the jobs governor hangs out in Boone, NC she will suck all of the common sense right out of us.
Please Bev Baby, keep your butt in Raleigh where they have no common sense. You don’t need to damage the rest of us.
Comment by yosef82 03.11.10 @ 7:09 pmi hate claytons
Comment by Gwaltineer 03.11.10 @ 7:18 pmright on 82….the same goes for the senator we have in DC….I realize this is not a political link however, somebody mentioned something about voting earlier…..Right now…it is still a free country….that could change
Comment by Dcocny 03.11.10 @ 7:21 pmOne look at the hair color explains everything.
Comment by AppAttack 03.11.10 @ 8:47 pmWith respect, some of us don’t appreciate sexist language here, no matter who is the target. Appfan wouldn’t tolerate racist remarks (I hope). Same should go for sexism and for that matter, gay-bashing. No objection to political remarks, but sexist name-calling should be off limits.
Comment by appnaysayer 03.11.10 @ 9:13 pmAre you really flippin out over a blond joke?
C’mon man.
Besides, bleach-blondes don’t count so it can’t be a hair thing that explains the lack of aptitude.
Comment by appfantoo 03.11.10 @ 11:22 pmNo, it’s not the blonde joke. It’s the use of a pejorative term for “female” senator. Same as using a pejorative term for African American or any other ethnic group. Shouldn’t be allowed–at least by any self-respecting blog. But then, the jury’s still out on Appfan.
Comment by appnaysayer 03.12.10 @ 7:35 amSeveral App State grads currently work for the governor, by the way.
Comment by appnaysayer 03.12.10 @ 7:51 ami hate jokes about bankers.
Comment by Gwaltineer 03.12.10 @ 7:56 amIf you guys all seem to realize this site is not about politics keep you yaps shut on the subject. Gez, one of the things I like about sports is that they are apolitical. It used to be a safe way to escape all the idiotic bickering about what’s right and what’s wrong in your city, state, country….
Can’t we all agree we love App sports????? Don’t we all pull for the same team???? Let’s just leave it at that.
Comment by Mike 03.12.10 @ 8:16 amLeave it to Naysayer to get the pot stirred up, hence his screen name.
Comment by herbstreitsucks 03.12.10 @ 8:26 amHerbie, are you saying it’s okay to use that term to describe a female senator? If so, that’s your opinion and you’re entitltled to it. I’m not stirring the pot, just pointing to a double standard when it comes to language. I’d say the same thing if said individual had referred to Senator Burr with a pejorative male term, such as (forgive me; I’m using this in an illustrative context) “hardleg.”
Comment by appnaysayer 03.12.10 @ 8:38 amIt’s a sports blog, what do you expect. I don’t condone, I’m just saying expect it. I’m not a big fan of her mainly because I’m a state employee and while thankful for my job, didn’t much care about the cut in pay last summer without much of a notice. Many things were doomed before she took office but some things were not handled correctly when in economic crisis mode.
Just wish the threads on here would stay sports related, that way you and I wouldn’t have anything to complain about except bad ball play.
Comment by herbstreitsucks 03.12.10 @ 9:18 amWe really don’t want to start something, but we’re really kinda confused. We saw naysayer accuse someone of racist-like language used in a sexist context. We reviewed the comments and really had no idea what he was talking about.
He’s since called us out again, so we studied most studiously the comments. We think we know which word he’s upset with. We thought we were up on the coolest “bad words” ever, but that’s a new one on us. (We swear we’ve never heard it cross George Carlin’s li- … uh … standup)
Same thing with the Burr “insult”. Put us on a ballot and call us George Allen. Never heard it before. We’re so uncool.
Comment by AppFan 03.12.10 @ 9:37 amBased on the clowns you people have been electing lately, I’m glad I don’t live in NC anymore.
Comment by Dave 03.12.10 @ 9:52 amYeah, Appfan should feel free to delete my post and the first reference to the offensive word, once they read it. In the meantime, blindfold the kids. Shouldn’t they be in school about now anyway?
Comment by appnaysayer 03.12.10 @ 10:14 am/giggle
We love that people who find certain words offensive have no problem repeating those exact same words in an attempt to let everyone know how no one should use them.
/more giggles
We posted this (original post) primarily because we think it says something cool that a prominent political person would open a meeting of (we assume) wealthy well-connected fellow citizens by referring to a college basketball team that doesn’t play in the ACC.
Comment by AppFan 03.12.10 @ 10:21 amIt doesn’t take much for the floodgates to be flung open on here sometimes.
Comment by yosef83 03.12.10 @ 10:29 amWhoa, YOU APPFAN, in fact, invited me to explain their meaning–which I did. Perhaps I should have posted the link and not the definition, my mistake. But, in all seriousness, you can’t in effect say, “what do these words mean?,” challenge my comment that they’re improper, and then fault me for answering your question. Or maybe you can…lots of folks on this blog are masters of spin.
My point was that this was passed off as harmless “locker room” humor and the same would not be true if someone used an equally offensive racist remark. It would be different if this were not a university-related blog. ASU has policies against discriminatory language and although the blog is not officially sanctioned by the university, it just doesn’t look good to have that kind of language used here. So the editors might exercise a little restraint on some of the more, uh, hillbilly-like posters.
Comment by appnaysayer 03.12.10 @ 10:31 amParticularly if there’s even a remote, tangential reference to politics.
Comment by DRM 03.12.10 @ 10:36 amNot that it matters, but my post was in response to 83s. Could relate as well to Naysayers’s, though.
Comment by DRM 03.12.10 @ 10:38 amGood grief! 83s? Naysayers’s? What’s wrong with my keyboard (can’t possibly be my fingers, you know!)?
Comment by DRM 03.12.10 @ 10:38 am“Particularly if there’s even a remote, tangential reference to politics.”
….or moving up to FBS, or the merits of soccer, or Tim Tebow, etc. etc.
Comment by yosef83 03.12.10 @ 10:42 amYou mean there are posters on here who question the merits of soccer??? Clearly, my career as missionary is a flop!
Comment by DRM 03.12.10 @ 11:37 amWait a sec, DRM. I didn’t say “question”. I merely mentioned it as a hot topic of previous discussions…..in a positive way of course!!! This sounds like something you should take up with Dan!
LOL.
Comment by yosef83 03.12.10 @ 11:47 amNot sure I have the energy to address this with Dan at the moment. I’m dealing with depression over my failure as a soccer missionary.
Comment by DRM 03.12.10 @ 11:52 am“hillbilly-like” offends me…Appfan shut this site down or hire an attorney!
Comment by ACLU 03.12.10 @ 1:53 pmWhile we’re on the topic of sensitivity… did anyone see Mike Leach’s locker room speech on Huffington Post today?

Appfan, I thought there was a restriction against sock puppetry, even by one of your own.
Comment by appnaysayer 03.12.10 @ 2:42 pmI am confused as well. I blame it on Donald Simms.
Comment by Gwaltineer 03.12.10 @ 3:02 pmOne look at the hair color explains everything.
Comment by AppAttack 03.11.10 @ 8:47 pm
is this seriously it? Seriously? Is it?
Comment by Gwaltineer 03.12.10 @ 3:03 pmNo Gwalt. Appfan took out the offensive language and I’m not about to post a link to it again. Suffice it to say that it was considerably more offensive than hair color. Ask Yosef 83. He was online for the good stuff.
Comment by appnaysayer 03.12.10 @ 7:10 pmWow, that Leach rant reall IS something.
Comment by appnaysayer 03.12.10 @ 7:13 pmYeah! I didn’t even know there was an “urbandictionary.com” until naysayer enlightened me!
Comment by yosef83 03.12.10 @ 7:25 pmNot something you want to look at every day. It was my mistake. I should have just posted a link instead of copying the info. But it’s all in cyberspace now. And Gwalt must be going crazy trying to figure out what we’re talking about.
Comment by appnaysayer 03.12.10 @ 7:27 pmI am going crazy. I am just having a hard time thinking of what Naysayer could get riled up about.
Comment by Gwaltineer 03.12.10 @ 8:08 pmWomen can’t drive.
Comment by Gwaltineer 03.12.10 @ 8:09 pmNeither can men if they’re from Florida.
Comment by DRM 03.12.10 @ 9:51 pmI’d be interested to know what we’re talking about. Generally speaking, i’m against censorship, especially if it’s because the terms in question are being thrown at a person of political influence. Obviously racist comments are a whole other situation, but I also don’t know how this term would correlate with a racist comment.
Comment by dan 03.13.10 @ 7:36 amAgain bearing in mind I don’t know the term in question, is it really bigotry if the insult is directed towards one person versus an entire group of people? Obviously with respect to racial slurs, this is the case, but in searching through my (extensive) vocabulary of offensive cut-downs, i’m having trouble coming up with a word that would be on par with a racial slur for women.
Comment by dan 03.13.10 @ 10:33 amok…i agree with Naysayer.
Comment by Gwaltineer 03.13.10 @ 2:34 pmnaysayer – I didn’t mean to imply your referencing urbandictionary as having taken the blog to a new low. I meant the original use of that term did.
Comment by yosef83 03.13.10 @ 3:14 pmThanks 83.
Eh. It’s just a word. It’s classless for sure, but i’ve always been of the opinion that words only have power if you let them.
Comment by dan 03.13.10 @ 3:40 pmNo worries, Yosef 83. No offense taken on my part. I do think words have power. Just look at how much discussion this one provoked (with a little help) and (as Appfan suggests) what “Maccaca” did to George Allen or the Strom Thurmond remarks to Trent Lott.
Of course “the vision thing” hasn’t sunk midwest yet, unlike Bush 41.
Comment by appnaysayer 03.13.10 @ 4:45 pmThose examples are a result of people giving words power they shouldn’t have. Anybody remember ’sticks and stones may break my bones…’?
Comment by dan 03.13.10 @ 6:58 pmthe “vision” thing has sunk midwest. Just like the football team bar fight thing sunk parkinglot.
Comment by Gwaltineer 03.13.10 @ 9:59 pmIf I were an educator at Appalachian, I would have told her to take a long walk off of a tall mountain. The local schools are crmbling while Gov. Bev slides money out of the education lottery fund to pay for her pet projects. Some say any publicity is good publicity; but if it involves Bev Perdue and Appalachian State then I will pass. She seriously makes me sick to my stomach.
