While we still ruminate the possible end of men’s bball season, how ’bout these other Mountaineers?
Blue Ridge Hockey Conference Playoff Champs

The App State Club hockey team beat Catholic University, 7-5, for the Hulsey Cup. (One of these days we’re making a game.)
SoCon Wrestling Champs

Three App State wrestlers won league titles and are now headed to the NCAAs next week, the most since five went in 2005 – Tony Gravely (125), Austin Trotman (184) and Dylan Temple (174).
SoCon Men’s Indoor Track Champs
A second straight title.
7-5 Hockey game! This is why hockey is light years ahead of soccer.
Comment by Dan 03.09.10 @ 4:11 pmHockey is always better than soccer! I’m happy to see the ASU hockey team getting some love! Way to work boys
Comment by Yosef4 03.09.10 @ 4:33 pmMaybe App could introduce speed skating and mix the success of track and hockey
Comment by Apolo Anton Ohno 03.09.10 @ 4:51 pmHow do you get a schedule for club hockey?
Comment by bumpa 03.09.10 @ 5:13 pmWay to go boys, good win eh… way to play some puck. I wish I knew more hockey things to say. Way to go to anwyays.
Them wrastlers sure are stcrong…. like stedman.
Comment by Rufus 03.09.10 @ 5:16 pmthe ice hockey team has a website: asuicehockey.com where you can find the schedule and stuff. the home rink is in Charlotte since boone doesnt have a rink. they’re a kick ass team though.
Comment by al2972 03.09.10 @ 6:17 pmWho knew App has a hockey team, even if it is non-varsity level? As hockey sweaters go, those look quite nice. Catholic U is a DIII school, though–wonder if their team is club level also.
Anything positive aside, hockey is a sport best left to natives of countries with a significant portion of their land mass north of the 66 parallel–that is, the Arctic Circle. And it is a sport NEVER better than soccer, and in this case, that includes even bad soccer like most collegiate matches and MLS.
Wrestling used to be a consistent team championship for App. It would be nice to regain the SoCon title from Chattanooga (I’m assuming they still win the conference–is that correct?).
Track–yet another win over Western!
Comment by DRM 03.09.10 @ 6:42 pmDRM, I respect your views on soccer. I grew up with the game and still play it and officiate it to this day. But(!), I have to disagree with you about it being better than hockey. The only 2 sports I played growing up were hockey and soccer. Hockey always takes the cake for me, either in playing or watching.
Can’t wait for the World Cup though. Going to the send off game in Philly in May when they play Turkey. And yes, I’ll be sitting with Sam’s Army.
Comment by Dominick 03.09.10 @ 8:03 pmGo App Wrestling!!
Comment by Mike 03.09.10 @ 8:04 pmWhen I worked at Legends, we had a few hockey players working there. They practiced on Duck Pond when it froze over.
Comment by Gwaltineer 03.09.10 @ 9:40 pmI didn’t know Billy Mays wrestled for App.
Comment by Gwaltineer 03.09.10 @ 9:41 pmGreat job Mountaineers! I was at the hockey game against Catholic and it was quite a show. Pretty impressed to say the least!
Comment by alex 03.09.10 @ 10:16 pm+1 gwalt.
Comment by appfantoo 03.10.10 @ 8:09 amI was at the SoCon indoor track championships at Clemson, and it came down to the last event. The heart and character of the ASU team was shining bright and they brought home a victory!! Now it’s time to look forward to the outdoor track championships which will be held in Boone!! Everyone is invited and there is no admission cost. Come support our Apps as they go for the “Triple Crown” of track (Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track)!
Comment by Derek 03.10.10 @ 9:00 amI used to be a certified FIFA official (but limited to U-16 and younger), too, Dom. I let the certification lapse after my son finished playing, though.
Everyone on Appfan has their favorite sports in addition to our universal love for App football. Aside from you, Midwest and myself, I can’t recall others admitting they enjoy soccer; no question, those that do are in the minority here, which is fine. I didn’t intend to disparage hockey or its lovers, however; mostly, I was just responding to Dan. He and I have a running discussion centered around my “calling” to convert him to soccer fandom, and his equally strong determination to resist conversion.
As a southern kid, I never played hockey, never enjoyed watching it even long before NHL expansion. To me, expansion–as with MLB expansion–made the league less interesting. Maybe I’m just a traditionalist, or maybe I’m just old or cranky–come to think of it, I’m actually all three of those!
I grew up playing baseball and still enjoy doing that, but I can’t stand to watch it. Unlike hockey, where the action seems (to me) too disorganized, I dislike watching baseball for its long periods of inaction (Naysayer would say that’s the thinking part of the game, but to me it’s just boring). Had my son’s primary sport turned out to be something other than soccer, most likely my exposure to the game would have been limited to watching Thompson Usiyan put on a show in KBS on soccer Sundays following football Saturdays. I’m glad I learned to love soccer though, as I really enjoy watching the game played at a high level, of which World Cup is the epitome. Also, soccer is the only team sport with a “world championship” that truly is; all the other sports, including the three “invented” in the US, are mere wannabes when it comes to crowning a world champion.
Comment by DRM 03.10.10 @ 9:07 amCuriosity question for the more knowledgeable track folks here–why is the SoCon indoor championship event held at Clemson? Does no SoCon school have suitable facilities?
Comment by DRM 03.10.10 @ 9:08 amNot a big soccer fan but I did attend a few games while I was a student during the Thompson Usian(probably misspelled his name).
I believe UNCG won wrestling this year.
When I was there I ran track with guys like Louis Blount, Steve Yannotti, Norman Blair and Richard Beeker just to name a few.It is always good to hear about ASU track/XC winning the SOCON.
Back then, before soccer took hold at many universities, Usiyan was incredibly dominant–closest thing App State has ever had to UConn women’s basketball-style dominance.
Vaughn Christian, App’s soccer coach at the time, reportedly had ties to someone on the Nigerian Olympic Committee and took Usiyan (plus a couple other Nigerian players) purely on recommendation. Turned out to be an excellent decision, though we could never beat Clemson, which had more and better foreign players than we did.
Comment by DRM 03.10.10 @ 11:07 amLooks like we are a Hockey and Football school now! Way to go Apps!
Comment by Yosef 03.10.10 @ 9:23 pmWhere can I get one of those great looking hockey sweaters?
Comment by Joshjj23 03.11.10 @ 12:50 amTo answer the question about the SoCon track championship being held in Clemson.
Appalachian State is the only Socon school that hosts indoor track meets. While the Holmes Center has a track it is not spectator friendly. Meaning that you can’t see the runners. I have been to all but one (Akron)of the indoor meets this year and believe me Clemson was by far the best facility that I visited.
Outdoor championship at the Rock April 24 & 25. This will be a huge improvement over last years visit to Statesboro.
Thanks, greg. Not surprising Clemson has the nicest facilities.
Comment by DRM 03.11.10 @ 1:17 pmDRM and greg,
To add to the fact that greg stated earlier, Clemson is close in location to the home office of the SoCon which is in Spartanburg (I think). And I’m pretty sure that Wofford and Furman don’t have any facilities to accomodate.
Comment by Derek 03.11.10 @ 3:31 pmcheckout ASUIceHockey.com and send them a message if your interested in hockey gear. They have jerseys, t shirts, ties, mugs, mouse pads a bunch of other stuff.
