Title game goes to the dogs

Need a deeper bench

Congrats to Wofford. The Terriers have been good all year.

They beat two SEC teams. Hung with some ranked teams. And shredded the SoCon.

Last night, they cut down App State. /sigh

The Wofford Terriers registered a breakthrough last night, earning their first Southern Conference title and NCAA Tournament berth with a 56-51 victory over the Mountaineers in a physical and somewhat strange game of two halves at Time Warner Cable Arena.

ASU buried itself too deep with a disastrous first-half performance. The Terriers offered a shovel or two to help the Mountaineers dig out in the second half, but the Mountaineers, perhaps worn from digging, couldn’t escape.

Our thoughts …

Sunday night, with just under five minutes to go and a 21-point lead over CofC, App State did something odd. Starters stayed in. And played till the end. Every timeout there was hooping and hollering. Hugs! And when the game ended with a 23-point deficit, the cable box arena exploded.

Only one problem. That was a semi-final. There was still work to be done.

We have no idea what happened after the teevee cameras went dark Sunday night and before the team tipped off late Monday. But that first half ….. yeesh. Five points in 11 minutes. Donald Sims (37 mins Sat., 38 mins Sun.) and Kellen Brand (34 mins,35 mins) were fuh-LAT. The rest of the team was fumbling.

Down 15 at the half (a challenge!), App responded!

The offense still coughed and wheezed, but the D stayed strong. And seemed to get stronger. The door was opened! The opportunity was there! LET’S GIVE ‘EM HELL BOYS!!!

But the offense just … couldn’t … quite … get … going.

At 14:42, it was a 10-point game. (Andre Williamson FG)

At 9:15, it was an 8-point game. (Williamson FG)

At 8:25, 6-point game. (Williamson FT)

At 4:00, 5 points. (Ryann Abraham FT)

At :57, 4 points. (Williamson FT)

And … and .. and …. theycouldgetnocloser.

In the final minutes of the biggest game of the season, Abraham and Williamson became the answers. And that’s just not the way App State was meant to play.

We have no idea the selection process for the NIT and the not-NIT. Chances are the season isn’t quite over yet. For now, well played tournament App State. And Wofford, ya better represent!

Buzz will get us some depth.

Sigh … this one was tough to swallow.

Comment by asu7 03.09.10 @ 10:01 am

Time to assign blame properly

The Davidson Wildcats & Steph Curry

If they hadnt had that rule they had to play in the early games we would have had the early Saturday and Sunday games and Wofford would have had the evening games.

This would have given them the dead legs and made the 5 point difference.

Then Davidson goes out and lays an egg on Friday.

Comment by cold beer 03.09.10 @ 10:36 am

even tougher to swallow knowing we didnt play our best game. the crowd was there, the energy was there, we just didnt have it. hurt to see KB just collapse at the ft line when the final horn sounded…tears immediately flowing down his cheek. good season boys, we’re allllmost there. hats off tot he asu crowd in charlotte. place was jumping with electricity last night. playa few home games in charlotte??/ hahah, kidding.

Comment by parking lot 03.09.10 @ 10:38 am

Hopefully Buzz can build on what he started this season. A team that was picked to finish dead last was 5 points away from the NCAA Tournament. Impressive.

In my opinion we need to work on a few things that will make all the difference next year:
1. PROTECT the basketball.
2. Consistency
3. Free Throw accuracy
4. SMART shot selection
5. Footwork in the paint

Regardless of last night’s outcome, we have a lot to celebrate from this season. The future of this program looks very solid right now.

Comment by Jamey 03.09.10 @ 10:56 am

I seem to recall someone (Craig maybe?) suggesting that our FT shooting would hinder us from winning the tournament. Good call, huh.

Comment by Dan 03.09.10 @ 11:08 am

Uh, Jamey, where are you getting we were picked to be dead last? We were expected to be second in the North in the pre season…

Comment by Joe 03.09.10 @ 11:25 am

We need better inside play and since the two transfers and the one JUCO guy we signed are post players we should get it next season. Fancher seemed to love midget ball for some reason and (except for Minter) we never really had a solid post player during his regime. Buzz was just stuck with the residue this season.

Comment by Flashman 03.09.10 @ 11:39 am

The smallest school in Division I to make the Big Dance. I hope they have to play Kansas in the first round and get blown away. I hate the SoCon and especially Wofford. I think we should join the ACC and tell the SoCon and the no name schools bye bye. I saw Jerry Richardson was there last night, woopie do.

Comment by App in Greenwood, SC 03.09.10 @ 11:41 am

We don’t have the option to just “join the ACC”.

Comment by yosef83 03.09.10 @ 11:46 am

We don’t? That’s a bummer.

Comment by App in Greenwood, SC 03.09.10 @ 11:49 am

Another one to add class to the SoCon is Ga. Southern. They should not even be called a University. They are a career center for Stateville High School. All the dumb kids that can’t get in college get sent to “the stink” to take machine shop and carpentry.

Comment by App in Greenwood, SC 03.09.10 @ 12:01 pm

Too bad there is so much negativity from App fans on here. I was very impressed with the swagger our team developed down the stretch of the season. This all goes back to Buzz and his coaching staff. The last few years our teams did not have the same confidence and never fold attitude. Let’s face it…Buzz can coach. He exceeded expectations with zero of his own recruits. As for all the position talk. I wouldn’t worry about who is a true point guard, power forward, etc. It appears to me that really good coaches make it happen without worrying about the traditional positions (Mike Krzysewski) The transfers appear to me to be combo-type forwards. If you think back to Buzz’s first stint in Boone, Cedric Holmes was a 6′4″ post player. But, he made it happen in the SoCon. Also, Tyson Patterson was a scoring point-guard. He led us in scoring on most occasions (just like Sims). Buzz know how to develop players and build a program. I look for good things for years to come out of ASU basketball.

And yes, our boys might have been tired last night, but they did get out played. Wofford was very good defensively. But, no they don’t compare to ASU academically…for the Wofford poster who seemed to think they had a great academic rep. As an educator, I understand that some schools have admission standards, and some will just say “come join us, especically if you have money.”

Comment by Appy97,00 03.09.10 @ 12:09 pm

My mistake Joe…I thought I read that in a Charlotte Observer article yesterday. Yes, they actually covered ASU in an article in the Charlotte Observer. It could be a sign that the world is coming to an end.

Comment by Jamey 03.09.10 @ 12:11 pm

It’s ok, I will forgive you Jamey — Just don’t make another mistake like that again!

I completely agree with Appy97,00. It wasn’t but 2 days ago everyone was saying “We’re amazing, Buzz is an awesome coach, nobody can stop Sims and KB, etc”.. now, after a hard fought battle against a VERY good team (I will not be surprised if they win in the first round — unless they get paired with ‘Nova like the current projections state), everyone is immediately of the bandwagon. Guess that’s what happens when nobody pays attention to the team during the season, and becomes a “fan” when they do well in the playoffs.

Comment by Joe 03.09.10 @ 12:21 pm

I am very pleased with the season. We made the Championship Game and won the North Division. Looking forward to next year, but still think we were the better team last night.

Comment by App in Greenwood, SC 03.09.10 @ 12:25 pm

Why does everyone I talk to at App want to move up? I do not understand this. You guys have a GREAT thing going right now in athletics. Why move up and most likely fade into oblivion like teams such as Marshall? Why not continue to strive to be relevant at the FCS level. Looks at what it has done for your school.

I know the flip side is to look at Boise State. They moved up and are relevant. Unfortunately, they will probably never get a chance (that they deserve) for a BCS championship. Same thing with App. If you guys move up, then you have likely won your last championship. I also think that moving up will change your recruiting and not positively. I believe that you are able to get talent that would use to go to NC State and ride the bench. Now you are getting those guys and they are difference makers at our level, but not CONSISTENTLY at the next level. Yeah, you guys beat Michigan. It was great. Could you consistently do that? I honestly do not know, but I would be concerned.

I am curious as to what you guys think about this.

Comment by wcufan 03.09.10 @ 12:34 pm

Not every App fan wants to move up, WCU. Some are completely in favor, some adamantly opposed, and some–maybe most of us–are in the middle somewhere. In addition to the points you make in favor of remaining in FCS, many of us worry about being able to compete with FBS teams in sports other than football; about the financial requirements of FBS; and about the loss of natural rivalries we enjoy (well, some of us do, anyway) in FCS/SoCon. The pro-FBS camp points out such factors as the obvious lack of respect FCS gets outside FCS schools and NCAA’s seeming intention to kill the FCS championship by moving it opposite the Cotton Bowl and to a no-FCS-football-land like Frisco, TX.

Don’t know how we could be termed the better team last night, Greenwood. We were out-played and out-coached. Does that completely negate a more successful season than most expected? Nope. Is it necessarily indicative of future years? Probably not. But last night, Wofford was clearly the better team, and the better prepared team.

Comment by DRM 03.09.10 @ 1:09 pm

wcufan, not everyone wants App to move up.. In fact, I would say majority do not want to

Comment by Joe 03.09.10 @ 1:10 pm

I’ve always been against ASU moving up UNLESS we can find some sugar daddy willing to give the ASU athletic department 30 or 40 million dollars to finance extra scholarships, better the facilities, increase coaches salaries, etc. Seeing as how there’s not a sugar daddy on the horizon (that I know of)…………

As far as last night goes, I wouldn’t say that Wawfie was better prepared or better coached. The reason we lost was because for whatever reason our better players failed to make ANY plays whatsoever. We need to get better players on our roster who are more consistent or we’ll always be running second to someone. I don’t like to run second.

Comment by Flashman 03.09.10 @ 1:25 pm

WCU you make valid points. I’m on the fence about moving up, mainly due to the ability to fund all sports to make each program competitive. I believe ASU has a niche (especially in NC) being in the FCS. I agree that recruiting could possibly be hindered if App moves up based on NC having the 2nd most Div-I football playing schools in the country, with 5 of those schools being FBS. NC isn’t exactly a hotbed for football talent. I think it also hurts not having a major tv market or an airport close to Boone.

IMO to remedy some of these issues and give ASU a chance, both Hickory and N.Wilkesboro need a mini explosion (economically) so that we may draw from those two areas. KBS needs to consistently put 30k butts in the seats and HCC needs to put a few thousand paying fans to increase revenue. Drawing fan interest from those towns will help to achieve the 30k+. If Hickory could boom, that may solve the airport issue. Also being able to market in those areas, as well as Winston-Salem/Triad down to Charlotte, could help with TV ratings.

From what I can gather, most of our fanbase seems to think that App has outgrown the Socon, especially with their trend of moving towards small private schools. The ASU fanbase travels pretty well and it sucks (from a spectator’s POV) to go into another team’s stadium and outnumber their fans. The players and the App’s fanbase seem to thrive off of big time atmospheres. A move up seems to be the remedy of finding other schools that are similar in size, with diehard fanbases such as ours. App has a few old school rivalries with other FBS schools (ECU, Marshall & Wake) that make sense if ASU does move up.

Whatever route App decides to take, I’ll support them. My biggest concern with moving up is money (of course) and being squeezed out by people who have more. If that’s the case, hopefully ASU gets more TV games so I can watch!

Comment by tim 03.09.10 @ 1:29 pm

I think Wofford’s game plan was clearly better than ours. That’s coaching. I’m speaking more of their defensive scheme than their offense, which was typical Wofford. On defense, they consistently shaded Sims and Brand with 1.5 guys, sometimes two. Inside, they were willing to let our poor hands guys catch the ball, then collapse on them and take the ball away. Their defensive preparation was largely why our guards failed.

We made adjustments during the game, but they felt more like “Hey, let’s try this–nothing else is working” than anything else. Wofford was better last night in every respect, from the head coach to the last guy on the bench.

Even so, chances are they’ll be a 14 seed at very best, probably a 15; some 2 or 3 seed will send them home quickly.

Comment by DRM 03.09.10 @ 1:34 pm

Great season for Buzz and the boys. They certainly gave the effort last night but just couldn’t get anything to fall and finally ran out of gas and time. Give the ankle biters credit, they did a great job of defending Sims and Brand on the perimeter and gave few open threes.

Was it just me or did ESPN do nothing but talk about Wofford all night??

This team will be bigger and better next year. I still hope there is some basketball left to be played this year…

Comment by SpeedkingATL 03.09.10 @ 1:39 pm

Not much to say about last night. ASU did not show up when it counted. It is hard to pull back into a game like that. Plus, Wofford D was all over our boys. Tough to take yes, but a damn nice season this year.
Also, I have lots of respect for the SoCon like I do the ACC. Raise ACC fan but have adopted the SoCon over the last 9 years since going to ASU.
I doubt ASU makes a move up, but either way I will support our teams!!!

We should all be proud of our ASU basketball team this year. We had a very good season and made great strides after the King College loss. As for the comment by wcufan, I think you make a good point and I tend to agree with you but am trying to keep an “open mind” regarding moving up in football. Too many ?s for me to just jump on the FBS bandwagon. Also, I wish people would quit downgrading the SoCon and other schools and be more positive. Rivalry is one thing but let’s show at little more class.

HEY APP IN GREENWOOD! I took machines shop at ASU and I have managed to serve as an Officer in the U.S. Army, manage two manufacturing plants with 100+ employees each, pay for three college educations, two homes two wives and one divorce! I currently work for the largest global cutting tool manufacturer in the world.

It is not always the subject you study, it is the place you learn it at and how you apply it that counts. If I had to do over again I would not change a thing. Please do not lump me and my IA brothers in the same category as those losers at the STINK!

Comment by Yosef82 03.09.10 @ 6:07 pm

That game last night, was not worthy of calling it a game. Wofford was terrible and App St was somehow worst than terrible. Neither team wanted to win last night. Simply put, this was the worst Basketball game of any kind (high school, college, professional, NBA, Women’s) that I have even attended. I have since worse on TV. Neither team desires to go the Dance. Wofford will go, but they will lose by 30+ points and they will not be a 16 seed.

You can look it up Wofford has won more than a couple of games this and score less 60 points. There was a game where they beat Citadel 44-42. Wofford shot worst then 30% and actual won that game.

Comment by mtd Security 03.09.10 @ 6:21 pm

Watched DVR replay. My thoughts have not changed. Neither team desire to win this game. Final statement was espn announcers said as the game ended that WOFFORD WOULD BE A TOUGH OUT FOR SOMEONE IN THE DANCE. I REPEAT THEY WILL LOSE BY 30+ AND WILL NOT BE A 16TH SEED.

Comment by mtd Security 03.09.10 @ 8:07 pm

There was 10 minutes in the first half where Wofford looked like a good team. There was 5 minutes in the second half where App looked like a good team. Other than that it looked like two pretty pathetic teams.
Wofford’s half court game exposed that we have no guards who can make their own plays in the half court game unless some serious outside shots are falling. This wasn’t close to happening last night.

You, woffordfan, are really demonstrating how uneducated you are. Quoting from a null source is just like someone believing everything they see/hear reported in traditional news media. I was educated at ASU, and understand how to decipher mediated information from actual information.

You just don’t lump a tiny liberal arts college with an excellent mid-size to large master’s university. It is apples and oranges. Do some real research and talk to the students/alumni, and visit for yourself. As an educator at the secondary and college level for years, I teach plenty of students who have gone to every college in the Carolinas.
If you want to look into liberal arts schools with standards, look at Davidson, and even Furman….heck, even UNC-Asheville, the public liberal arts school in NC has much higher admission standards than Wooford.

Comment by Appy97,00 03.10.10 @ 7:11 am

Turned out to be a good season. We need a REAL point guard and a big man who can get off the floor and attack the basket. Butts dissapionted me in his lack of ability to use his size to take over down low. Williamson has some promise but lacks the size to be a force in the middle. Looking forward to next year. For a small liberal arts college, Wofford does, in fact, have pitifully low admission standards. No self-respecting liberal arts college would compare itself to a comprehensive state university, unless said college has a real inferiority complex. No one will ever mistake Spartanburg for the Cambridge of the upcountry.

Enjoy the win. You earned it over a team that lost to Campbell and King College, but please…we have a knowledgeable fan base and more than a few academic types on this board…so don’t come here and try to sell that admissions office snake oil about Wofford’s alleged standards.

Comment by clayton 03.11.10 @ 8:06 am

They’re probably not too disappointed about that fact, though.

Average SATs of 1,237 at a liberal arts school are–to use your word, Naysayer–pitifully low. As long as thirteen years ago (last time I had any reason to check), SAT averages at both Washington and Lee and Davidson were roughly 125 points higher than that, both bit above 1,350. I expect averages at each of those schools have risen since then.
