Open thread – SoCon tourney championship
Monday March 08th 2010, 5:46 pm

SCintheQCNot sure what to say really. App State has been here before, about 10 years ago. This is a first for Wooford. Both have a player of the year. Both had big wins Sunday. Both are ROLL-un! So who is the odds on fav to dance? This confuses us, but it’s laid out right here – “Wofford -4.5.”

AT THE HALF. Wofford up, 33-18. It ain’t pretty. Our theory – adrenaline hangover. The Mountaineers just look tired.

I’ve been hype since I woke up at seven this morning. If we bring the intensity and passion again tonight – and hit the boards and watch the turnovers – we’ll be dancing. Brand & Sims Show tonight in Charlotte. Get that ticket punched APPS!

He probably was worried about Brand droppin another 30+ on his team instead of watchin the road!

Comment by ASU in the QC 03.08.10 @ 6:37 pm

William & Mary and ASU both playin for the dance tonight. Shades of the football playoffs..with different results I hope.

Comment by Appnaysayer 03.08.10 @ 7:07 pm

Comment by dan 03.08.10 @ 9:27 pm

About time for one of those famous Buzz Peterson adjustments.

Comment by Appnaysayer 03.08.10 @ 9:28 pm

we currently look like CofC did against us last night.

Comment by Van 03.08.10 @ 9:28 pm

This is just rediculous… it’s looking a bit like Duke/UNC the other night. And you know who was the official for that game as well…

Comment by appstategrad2008 03.08.10 @ 9:28 pm

We have got to get this under 10 by half

Comment by AppOrange 03.08.10 @ 9:29 pm

LONG way to go…but it aint looking good right now…we might have made all our shots last night, need some tonight BAD

Comment by Kidd Brewer 03.08.10 @ 9:30 pm

Comment by AppOrange 03.08.10 @ 9:31 pm

Comment by Van 03.08.10 @ 9:32 pm

I’m guessing all of the ASU fans are sitting on the side where the camera actually is?

Comment by appgirl 03.08.10 @ 9:32 pm

A little dissapointed in the noise from our fans but we have disgraced our selves enough on ESPN by rushing the field with 3 min left in the national championship so let’s emmbarASS our selves by not showing up tonight

Comment by Snydermb 03.08.10 @ 9:34 pm

Get it under 10 by half!!!

Comment by AppOrange 03.08.10 @ 9:35 pm

maybe the hatches are battened to weather the initial storm….ok, waves hit…time to hit the deck and mop up APP~~~~~

Comment by Van 03.08.10 @ 9:35 pm

Comment by Appnaysayer 03.08.10 @ 9:52 pm

BULLS*%T

Comment by AppOrange 03.08.10 @ 9:57 pm

I’m not trying sound like a homer, but this has to be the most poorly officiated game i’ve ever seen.

Comment by Reiss 03.08.10 @ 9:57 pm

I would have to agree with your Reiss….worst thing I’ve seen

Comment by appgirl 03.08.10 @ 9:58 pm

they won the 1st half…big deal….now we come back in 2nd half and win this thing.
GO APPS!!!!!

Comment by Van 03.08.10 @ 9:58 pm

This game’s officiating reminds me alot of last night’s game… these refs seem like they’re calling the game one way. Some of the calls here are just that absurd. Just plain highway robbery.

Comment by appstategrad2008 03.08.10 @ 9:59 pm

Sounds like the refs are doing a standard SoCon job…….. and by that i mean awful

Comment by LP APPFAN 03.08.10 @ 10:00 pm

Appy & Apelchian these announcers are awful.

Beating a 15-15 South Carolina team and a 13-16 UGA team is not that great BTW

Comment by appmaj 03.08.10 @ 10:01 pm

sims and brand will wake up in the 2nd half and make this a game before its over……. They are to good to lay down

Comment by LP APPFAN 03.08.10 @ 10:02 pm

I’ll say this, after that half, I feel a little fortunate to only be down 15. Buzz needs to work the Ref too.

Comment by AppOrange 03.08.10 @ 10:02 pm

I think with 5 minutes left the officials decided to change their minds on how they officiate the game.
The shot clock call was unreal.
We’ve got to push it to the hole. Unless we come out knocking everything down, the only way we’ll get some room to shoot is to push it hard to the basket.

Comment by Gwaltineer 03.08.10 @ 10:03 pm

These refs really, really suck. I don’t like saying that, but this is ridiculous. Heck, Brand knocks their guy down and Wofford gets called for kicking the ball. Should have been a foul on Brand. Valentine & Lucky – especially Lucky – are just incompetent. Makes me want to puke.

Comment by BUTCH1991 03.08.10 @ 10:05 pm

Butts is the worst big man i’ve ever seen. he is such a pussy foot in the paint and goes up like a fat girl. go lift some weights, become a man. what a joke.

Comment by jared 03.08.10 @ 10:05 pm

Ike is pathetic

Comment by Jared 03.08.10 @ 10:07 pm

Refs aren’t why we are down 15…Sims 4 pts, Brand 0 pts…and periods of NOOOO Defense. As good as we played last night, it’s 180 degrees different tonight. 20 min is a long time….but we gotta play better.

Comment by Kidd Brewer 03.08.10 @ 10:08 pm

No one on our team is taking it hard to the hole. The refs are letting them play, but that is what it is….got to accept it and go. And oh how I wish Hunter had a shot. We’re four on five on offense unless he gets it inside.

Comment by Appnaysayer 03.08.10 @ 10:11 pm

Agreed, Ref’s didn’t make us turn the ball over or keep missing easy shots down low. The foul calls could be better though.

Comment by AppOrange 03.08.10 @ 10:12 pm

I didn’t expect Brand to drop 37 again….but a goose-egg?!?! If you told me before the game that Sims and Brand would have 4 points combined at half…I’d be glad to be down 15. Get some 3’s to drop, cut it in half in the next 8 min and then were in it.

Comment by Kidd Brewer 03.08.10 @ 10:12 pm

And was it just me or did that first half fly by??? Last night’s game took FOREVER…I guess it’s because were down…GO APPS

Comment by Kidd Brewer 03.08.10 @ 10:14 pm

Does the SoCon get an automatic NIT bid? I know there’s one if the regular season winner gets knocked off in the tourney. I’m afraid this party is over.

Comment by Appnaysayer 03.08.10 @ 10:18 pm

Wofford is pretty good defensively….and we’re barking at refs…need to wake up, or we may lose by 40

Comment by Kidd Brewer 03.08.10 @ 10:19 pm

i think the announcer is mis-pronouncing on purpose…idiot

Comment by Van 03.08.10 @ 10:22 pm

I’m not saying that it is necessarily negatively affecting us…certainly not helping, but all around, it’s an awful game. We definitely have to wake up defensively and try to get some type of offense going as well or we are done.

Comment by appgirl 03.08.10 @ 10:22 pm

We can’t shoot

Comment by AppOrange 03.08.10 @ 10:25 pm

Wofford is playing GREAT defense. Might be time to try Highsmith or somebody. Get someone in who can hit a shot off a screen. I can’t figure out what Booth is doing.

We’ve hit only 7 baskets this whole game!

Comment by Appnaysayer 03.08.10 @ 10:25 pm

They’re putting all kinds of effort out there and leaving it on the floor… that’s all we can really ask for from our boys I guess… LET’S GO APP.

Comment by appstategrad2008 03.08.10 @ 10:25 pm

Legs look tired too. Shots are short.

Comment by Appnaysayer 03.08.10 @ 10:26 pm

These bozo announcers don’t even know the players’ names. Four times now, the play-by-play goofball has called Williamson “Martin.”

Comment by Appnaysayer 03.08.10 @ 10:28 pm

keep breathing YOSEF!!!!!!!! give it the ol’ come back Hulk Hogan Leg drop

Comment by Van 03.08.10 @ 10:31 pm

We have had some chances

Comment by AppOrange 03.08.10 @ 10:32 pm

You just can’t deny our energy in this second half… they are so fired up!! Just keep chipping away and be SMART with the ball!! LET’S GO APP

Comment by appstategrad2008 03.08.10 @ 10:33 pm

sloppy sloppy ball play on both sides.

Comment by herbstreitsucks 03.08.10 @ 10:35 pm

Comment by Van 03.08.10 @ 10:42 pm

You gotta be proud of this team for the grit they’re showing right now.

Comment by appstategrad2008 03.08.10 @ 10:44 pm

I love sims as much as the next appoholic but he is an awful PG a great scorer but a blind man could see the floor better

Comment by Snydermb 03.08.10 @ 10:46 pm

Terrrible call

Comment by AppOrange 03.08.10 @ 10:50 pm

I don’t see how that was a foul… obviously he got all ball.

Comment by appstategrad2008 03.08.10 @ 10:50 pm

Sims looks out to lunch. Just fouled a 3-point shooter with 2 on the shot clock. Keep your head in the game. This is one ugly championship, but we’re in it if we play a little smarter.

Comment by Appnaysayer 03.08.10 @ 10:51 pm

If they don’t call that foul, Sims scores a layup and and its a 3 point game. Instead it will be 7 or 8

Comment by AppOrange 03.08.10 @ 10:52 pm

Dumb play. All there is to it. He had the 3 contested. No need to risk a foul.

And we’ve missed enough free throws to have tied the score.

Comment by Appnaysayer 03.08.10 @ 10:55 pm

This half court offense of ours is just awful!

Comment by Rick 03.08.10 @ 10:57 pm

No joke on the free throws….That is the one thing that you cannot miss. They don’t call them “free” throws for nothing.

Comment by appgirl 03.08.10 @ 11:01 pm

Hunter is just not a free throw shooter.

Comment by Appnaysayer 03.08.10 @ 11:03 pm

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many chances to win this game as bad as we have played

Comment by AppOrange 03.08.10 @ 11:04 pm

FREE THROWS WOULD HAVE US LEADING COMFORTABLY.

Comment by Van 03.08.10 @ 11:04 pm

sums up sims night

Comment by AppOrange 03.08.10 @ 11:06 pm

I’ve gotta commend Ryann Abraham’s play… he’s a senior trying to will us to victory when other top performers aren’t playing well tonight.

Comment by appstategrad2008 03.08.10 @ 11:09 pm

4 misses in a row for us and a 63% guy steps up and hits 4 in a row for them . . . the difference.

Comment by AppOrange 03.08.10 @ 11:10 pm

Old bugaboos bite: turnovers and missed FTs.

And here, my friends, are the daggers.

Comment by Appnaysayer 03.08.10 @ 11:13 pm

crappy day at work ends with a crappy b-ball game….

Comment by A.Freeman 03.08.10 @ 11:16 pm

Comment by Van 03.08.10 @ 11:17 pm

Comment by general 03.08.10 @ 11:19 pm

Comment by Van 03.08.10 @ 11:20 pm

…but…..what a ride for Buzz’s first season back on the hill!!

Hats off to the Buzzer and Team!!!

y’all make us proud!!!

APPNATION ROCKS>>>1!!!!

GOOD NIGHT VAN OUT!

Comment by Van 03.08.10 @ 11:22 pm

Observations:

1) Did we have ANY fans at the game? You wouldn’t know it, except for the few App State trolls they showed once, maybe twice. Man, our fan base needs some work in the looks department, especially the women.

2) Where was Brand?

3) Do these guys ever practice free throws?

4) 16,000 enrollment vs. 1,600 enrollment and Wofford fans made a much better showing on TV. Frankly, it was embarrassing.

Now, back to a REAL App State sport…football!!!

Comment by appfanmidwest 03.08.10 @ 11:22 pm

Give it up for our boys… you could hear the “IT’S GREAT TO BE A MOUNTAINEER” chants when Wofford was at the line sealing the game. Our guys showed so much for us to be proud of tonight. Congrats to Wofford for their first ever tournament birth… we’re going to be loaded next season. Let’s go to the NIT and try to make some noise.

There’s just nothing better than seeing your team lay it all on the line out there and leave everything on the floor. I’m so proud to be a Mountaineer.

Comment by appstategrad2008 03.08.10 @ 11:22 pm

Ok, that was harsh. Congrats to Buzz and the gang for exceeding expectations this year! man, I hate losing.

Comment by appfanmidwest 03.08.10 @ 11:23 pm

It was our game to win….just wasn’t our night. Still, if someone had told me we would be playing for the championship at the beginning of the season I would have been thrilled…..Go APPS !!!! Now, can’t wait for football AND basketball next year!!! Time to focus on the bball team!!! It still is a GREAT day to be a Mountaineer!

Comment by appfanAl 03.08.10 @ 11:23 pm

ASU VS UNC …BOONE….NIT….

is that still conceivably possible?

Comment by Van 03.08.10 @ 11:24 pm

so we r in the NIT?

Comment by appfan4lfye 03.08.10 @ 11:24 pm

ASU wins that one 77 to 65….

Comment by appfanAl 03.08.10 @ 11:25 pm

Wofford= Dumb kids with rich parents

Comment by appfanmidwest 03.08.10 @ 11:25 pm

I don’t think we will get an invite to the NIT.

Comment by appfanmidwest 03.08.10 @ 11:26 pm

We can be proud of the comeback. Tall order to fight back against a ball control team like Wofford, especially with Brand and Sims AWOL and Butts in foul trouble (a point that seemed lost on the announcers). Williamson played well (even though the announcers didn’t know his name until he had led us back). He’s going to be good next year if he can keep his head on straight. I feel for Josh Hunter. Played hard and he’s worked all year on his FTs.

I look for us to get an NIT bid or something from one of the other also-ran tourneys. No way we’ll play UNC in Boone, but maybe someone else if we could win one on the road.

Comment by Appnaysayer 03.08.10 @ 11:30 pm

I thought the announcers were weak. How many times did they forget how to pronounce our name correctly. It’s not that difficult. Our fans got zero respect in that game from the cameras or announcers.

ESPN still sucks…along with Herbstreit.

Comment by appfanmidwest 03.08.10 @ 11:34 pm

How about the fact that we couldn’t make a shot in the first half

Comment by tang 03.08.10 @ 11:36 pm

FCS=NIT. One of these days, we will move out of mom and dad’s basement. The vision still needs a little more work, but we are still on track to become that “shining city on the hill.”

The vision is like the force. May it always be with you.

Comment by appfanmidwest 03.08.10 @ 11:37 pm

There are two places we have struggled ALL year with a few exceptions: 1) TURNOVERS, TURNOVERS, TURNOVERS!!!! 2) Half-court offense. We depend on Brand/Sims/etc bailing us out in the halfcourt with a 1-on-1 play. I don’t know where we rank in terms of assists per game, but I’ll bet its closer to the bottom than the top. We have to find a ball-handler and work on our spacing as far as the to’s go. Hunter improved his FT shooting mightly and was the 1 reason I think you could point to for our resurgence … but tonight, it was the old Josh’s stroke, unfortunately.

I definately think we are deserving of an NIT birth, but it ain’t gonna happen. Historically, we just don’t get the opportunity, plus we looked like crap tonight. It took a fabulous year to get our birth last time and now we have no “quality” ooc wins and a couple of horrible losses (Campbell, King, GaSo). We’ll be headed to the CBA, CTI, CPA or whatever the hell its called.

Comment by Rick 03.08.10 @ 11:59 pm

Plus the last time we made the NIT, we had the best year in our history, and we had to go on the road to play Ole Miss. No way H*** that we would get a game in Boone, let alone UNC. If we played UNC it would be at Carmichael. Not saying its right, just the way we always get the short stick.

Comment by Rick 03.09.10 @ 12:02 am

As I understand it, we get an automatic bid to the NIT… apparently the runner up in the SoCon gets an autobid. As for seeding, who knows.

Comment by appstategrad2008 03.09.10 @ 12:20 am

No, the regular season champ gets the auto bid if they don’t win the tournament. See Davidson last year. Our best chance is the CBI. The Campbell and King College losses are going to hurt us.

Comment by Coultraine 03.09.10 @ 12:46 am

Not sure what the TV showed, but there considerably more App fans there than Wofford fans. Though, the Wofford students were all seated together and they were loud. Of course, the App fans had little to cheer about for large stretches of the game. This tournament was the best fan showing for ASU basketball in a long time.

BTW, it was the Wofford fans who were cheering “I’d hate to be a Mountaineer” that you heard.

Comment by Hapapp 03.09.10 @ 1:18 am

We just got back to Boone from CLT and I have to agree with HapApp, there were definitely more App fans there than Wofford. Wofford’s students must have been bussed in from SC, they had a huge crowd of students, and were there early and they were loud. Only if App’s Spring Break could have fallen on a different week!!! Good come back guys..so proud of you and the great season you gave us fans!

Comment by Carolinagrlasu 03.09.10 @ 1:51 am

Time for hibernation, see you all in August for football season. Its was a good BBall Season, but its now over. Noone cares about the CBI or the CIT if we are invited.

I hope UNC is not invited to the NIT. They do not desire it.

Comment by mtd Security 03.09.10 @ 2:21 am

I have been following this blog for about two years, and this is the first post I have been compelled to write. I was at the game in person. Buzz didn’t coach tonight. We had a clear size advantage in the post and never used it. We tried to rely on our playmakers creating plays, as supposed to the coaching staff creating plays. Buzz was literally staring at the floor and looking like he had given up for most of the second half. I was with a large group of alumni who are all very strong supporters of App athletics and very knowledgeable, and all agreed there wasn’t near enough coaching going on.

Comment by Bryan 03.09.10 @ 4:01 am

I’m going to take a nap.

Comment by clayton 03.09.10 @ 5:48 am

To Do List:

Find a point guard.
Teach Butts not to put the ball on the floor.
Figure out exactly why Booth is out there.
Use Williamson more.
Remember how this felt and use it as a motivator.

Comment by Appnaysayer 03.09.10 @ 7:00 am

Find a point guard?!?! We have a guy named Sims that averaged about 20 a game this year….. heard of him?

Comment by LP APPFAN 03.09.10 @ 7:25 am

If you’ve seen more than a game or two or EVER played basketball, you’d know that Sims is NOT a point guard. He’s a 2 guard, a shooter. Does not distribute the ball. He was forced into playing point because we had no one else. Try to keep up LP. By the way, everyone’s gone digital now.

Comment by Appnaysayer 03.09.10 @ 7:29 am

Okay, here’s my thoughts.

Tough, tough loss last night.

There were way more App fans than Wooford fans.

I hate Wooford.

We were tired and it showed (perhaps from the CoC game).

I hate this for the Seniors, but we will be very strong next year.

I thought Buzz did the best he could. Not quite sure what you’re talking about Bryan, but welcome to the board.

All in all, it was an up and down year. The guys came on strong, made a great tournament run and made this App fan proud of them.

Time for Baseball, and then…Football.

It’s great to be a Mountaineer.

Oh yeah, the officiating last night SUCKED.

That is all.

Comment by Fleetwood App 03.09.10 @ 8:06 am

I’ll add to naysayer’s list:
install new half court offense
add a big man with a mid-range jump shot

Whatever offense App was running against WC did not work. They were obviously doubling up on Sims and Brand (Butts in the post), can Buzz not design a play or two to take advantage of the double teams?

Also, the PF has to be a threat to shoot from the freethrow line. Several times both Hunter and Williamson were wide open just beyond the FT line and didn’t take the shot. If they can knock that down a couple of times it would have openned up Butts on the block.

Comment by tim 03.09.10 @ 8:11 am

Naysayer’s right about Sims. Its not a knock on him but, he’s just out of position at point guard. He’s deadly at the 2 (reminds me of 2004 when Lynch was hurt and Wiggins had to play free safety and some guy from Davidson last year).

Add a PG to Sims and the 2 transfers and we have a good future.

Comment by clayton 03.09.10 @ 8:16 am

No offense if he reads this blog but, anybody know why that goofy red headed App fan was kicked out?

Comment by clayton 03.09.10 @ 8:17 am

Time for football …

and everything Naysayer and Fleetwood said …

Buzz did an excellent job to go from where we were at last year to this year. Bring on next year. No NIT for us.

Crowd was awesome last night. I just wish the outcome had of been different.

I watched it on TV and you would have thought there were 10,000 Wofford fans to App’s 1,000 last night. Seriously, the only showed App fans 2-3 times the whole game.

Maybe Butts has an acting career. I hear they are making The Blind Side 2. He’s a big man, but shouldn’t dribble.

We would have been within 1 point if we would have hit crucial free throws at the end. Let’s face it, we played like shit.

Note to Wofford fans: Your parents may be wealthy, you may have some nice seersucker suits and boe ties, but you are still DUMB. That’s right, Wofford= Dumb kids with rich parents.

Comment by appfanmidwest 03.09.10 @ 8:30 am

I was just down the row from him… at halftime we got the stat sheet that had the three ref’s names on it. (We only needed two, Teddy Valentine is kinda obvious). Anyway, long story short, the student section agreed that the ref’s sucked. So he starts yelling at all of them by name (like we dont do that in boone every game). Apparently he said “Tony (the other african american ref) I know who you are,” with the intention of saying now we know your name. Maybe he took it as a threat or something cause he marched right over to the security guard and had him ejected. Which is wierd cause i know security didnt hear or see anything and i had already called Valentine some pretty choice words in the first half.

Comment by mgood89 03.09.10 @ 8:30 am

Yeah, I disagree about the coaching. Appeared to me that Buzz tried about everything I could think of, from set plays to personel. Tried to press/trap. We just didn’t have it. The guys gave a great effort in coming back, just came up a little short.

Comment by Boonedocks 03.09.10 @ 8:30 am

BTW did yall know Jason Hunter was there? It was good to see him supporting the APPs.

Might be a good idea to get the football team to do ads supporting the basketball team.

An App. St. fan calling Wofford students and alum dumb – that’s rich.

Better luck next year hillbillies.

You know it’s true woffordfan. Let’s see…open enrollment for those with cash.
Every Wofford alum I know either lives with mommy and daddy or works for mommy and daddy. Why? Because they can’t make it on their own. It’s like releasing Shamu into the ocean. You’d get eaten alive!

Comment by appfanmidwest 03.09.10 @ 8:46 am

I figured all the magic from our win over CofC would wear off… and it most surely did. We have to give the Apps credit for making a game of it. They could have easily given up. We’re simply not going not going to win when Brand and Sims shoot 2 for 23 and the team shoots just 28% from the field. I also thought Sims made some poor decisions (especially down the stretch). I don’t know why when we pulled close we abandoned the inside game and instead started throwing up 3’s… Hunter shooting 2 of 7 from the free throw line hurt too. Those misses seemed to come at crucial times. Oh well at least it was nice to get back to the championship game. Hopefully this will become a trend rather than an anomaly.

Comment by Brad 03.09.10 @ 8:49 am

Geez. Can we get beyond calling the opposition names? We lose the game and now we think we can hurt them by calling them names.

The better team won last night. The scoreboard says so. Let’s at least lose with some class.

And to Wofford fans…I know you haven’t been there before…but act like it and take the win and show some class.

Comment by Hapapp 03.09.10 @ 8:53 am

Dude, don’t be a sore loser.

Are there spoiled kids at Wofford? Yes. Are all of them – of course not. This pretty much holds true at any school – even App. St.

Fact of the matter is we have under 1500 kids and we still able to take your b-ball team to the woodshed. You think those guys that put your boys on the floor all night are preppy daddy’s boys?

We’re a school with a great academic reputation and we’re building a good sports rep. App St. is a school with a great sports rep, no doubt.

You lost, get over it, move on.

Comment by woffordfan 03.09.10 @ 8:54 am

Woffordfan,

You and I both know that your (and our) athletes are not entirely representative of the student body. It takes 8 players to make a good team. Duke has 9,000 students and they would destroy the likes of Ohio State, Texas, Florida, Arizona State any day of the week (50k enrollments).

Besides, I’m just having some fun. Relax.

Comment by appfanmidwest 03.09.10 @ 8:58 am

Will people please stop categorizing five-point wins as woodshed beatings?

Comment by Dan 03.09.10 @ 9:04 am

Forget the Wofford fans/players…..WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO OUR TEAM LAST NIGHT? Butts looked like he had never played basketball in his life. Sims was throwing up Hail Mary shots with 10 minutes left in the game. Hunter could not hit a free throw if he had 100 shots.

Obviously Brand was worn out from dominating this week. I could see that he was trying to spark the team, but his legs were shot. You had to feel bad for the guy at the end of it all when Caple was trying to get him up and off the court. I give the few Wofford players that came over and spoke to him a lot of credit for showing class. As for Sims…he honestly should have been sitting right beside Butts for the majority of the 2nd half. He took the ball out of the offense’s hands with stupid shots and careless ball handling.

Comment by Jamey 03.09.10 @ 9:04 am

Well, I thought nobody could play worse than D. J. Thompson did against C of C in 2007 but Donald Sims and Kellen Brand both managed to do just that last night. When your supposed two best players stink up the gym you’re not going to win anything. We’re lucky we got it as close as we did. This team deserves no post-season. They didn’t earn it. They beat nobody during the regular season and they lost in the finals to a team that will probably lost by 20+ in the first round of the NCAAs. Fatigue my ass. Wofford was playing their third game in three days too. This game was a disgrace and shows that this program still has a long ways to go. We ain’t there yet. We may never get there. At least we’ll have some fresh blood coming into the program next year who can push some of our returning players and keep them from becoming complacent. That’s something we didn’t have this year.

And Woofurd fan, at least your students weren’t able to do that “just like football chant.” Now STFU and enjoy your short stay in the NCAAs.

Comment by Flashman 03.09.10 @ 9:12 am

Wofford can be a tough draw in the first round. They play stout defense and are fundamentally sound. If their opponent doesn’t put them away early, they will be in for a fight.

Let’s face it our best players didn’t rise to moment. However, Wofford deserves a lot of credit for that. Not sure how many of you folks listened to the Buzz and the players in the postgame, but they couldn’t emphasize enough how tough Wofford played. They certainly gave Wofford plenty of credit.

Comment by Hapapp 03.09.10 @ 9:21 am

I was at the game last night and I find it weird that it didn’t look like there were alot of App fans there per someone’s post above. I would say it was 80% App fans and the crowd was into the game the whole way through. It was the best atmosphere I can remember at an App basketball game in a long time…..

Comment by Mark03 03.09.10 @ 9:24 am

First off, I despise Wofford but I wanted to be gracious and not degrade them in their win. They won so congrats, However, you leave me no choice when asinine statements are made on our board.

I wouldnt think to highly of yourself. Great is somewhat of a stretch and rather naive really. The academic snobbery is hilarious until you get into the real world and find out crap, nobody thinks my degree is as good as I do. Simply Reasoning you have a great academic reputation does not make it so. Some rankings to please Midwest and others demanding statistical evidence.

See Derrick Rose, John Wall and Chauncy Billups just to name a few…. I would rather have Sims running the show than anyone else in the SoCon. Comment by Fleetwood App 03.09.10 @ 10:11 am

We were outplayed, no doubt.

We were also badly out-coached–game planning being part of coaching. WC had an effective plan and stuck with it: shade Sims and Brand with 1.5 players; collapse on our weak-hands, can’t-jump interior presence and take the ball; slow the pace; wait patiently ’til we make a defensive mistake, then take a good shot. We, on the other hand, made several adjustments but all were more in the vein of “. . . hell, nothing else is working, let’s try this.” Couple our poor preparation versus the opposition’s with a poor shooting night (much of that courtesy of the opposition) and an inability to hit FTs at critical points, and you get a loss. What’s the old adage–you can’t win a game in the first half, but you can lose one? We lost the game in the first half of the first half. The five-point margin doesn’t come close to reflecting how badly we were beaten. If this had been a football loss to the tiniest of the SoCon’s tiny privates, Midwest would be apoplectic; probably the rest of us, as well.

As Flash says, we don’t deserve any postseason play, neither NIT nor any of the sub-junior junior tournaments. As Midwest says, now we can focus on football, now less than six months away. The approximately 13 of you who actually enjoy baseball can focus on that in the meantime, and I can look forward to World Cup barely three months from now. The rest can take care of your 1040s and/or go fishing, I suppose, or maybe when the temps warm a bit, take a beach trip.

Comment by DRM 03.09.10 @ 10:34 am

I have to give props to Buzz and the Boys. I did not expect us to rebound after losses to Campbell and King. This is definitely a year to build upon.

I’m not sure what the hell was going on with ESPN last night, but you would have thought that Wofford had 10,000 fans there and App only had 100. They didn’t even show our fans more than a few times the entire game. Then again, we didn’t have much to cheer about until the very end.

Nice year guys! It only gets better from here.

I will spend my days lamenting the loss of Michael Owen from England’s World Cup squad, whether Scotland will qualify in 2014, and even then if they will finally get out of the preliminary round, if a player from any country other than Italy, Brazil or Argentina can join the list of multiple world cup winners, and the odds of the US defeating England on June 12th.

to wofford, congrats on the win. you out played us from the get go. you won the conference and you deserved the win. i was wondering when the old app team would be back and there they were. but to say that app is a bunch of hillbillies and that our school sucks and yours is so much better academically, get real. Both schools are very strong academically. But if you check the links above, you are ranked 60th and App is ranked 8th, so yea. they are both great schools and i have many friends at WU. Congrats on the win and we will see you next year. Go kick some butt in the big dance, i will be pulling for you.

Comment by appirishmen 03.09.10 @ 1:42 pm

Comment by DRM 03.09.10 @ 1:49 pm

Don’t worry DRM, I did some wiki searching to come up with those points. I wouldn’t know Michael Owen if he walked into a room with a sign that said “Hi, I’m Michael Owen!”

Comment by Dan 03.09.10 @ 1:54 pm

Good luck on Wofford kicking some butt in the big dance. Never happen! How we didn’t beat those jerks is beyond me. One of the reasons the SoCon has lost what reputation it had is letting schools such as Wofford join the conference. I have nothing against small colleges, but they should be together in the NAIA.

Comment by App in Greenwood, SC 03.09.10 @ 2:15 pm

Honestly, Dan, I wouldn’t recognize the guy if he were to walk in. If he was wearing a sign, I would know that he’s one of the English stars. I didn’t know that he’s injured, however (I’m assuming that’s what you meant by his being lost to the English squad).

Unfortunately for the US, his absence won’t make that much difference when we play England in group play. Unlike our national team, theirs has plenty of quality depth, so replacing a proven goal scorer like Owen won’t be nearly as big a deal as our trying to replace Charlie Davies, who was injured in a car crash. We have several other key injuries, too.

Nevertheless, on paper at least, US should be one of the two teams from our group to “go through” to the knock-out rounds (England being the other). Never can tell though–US soccer is almost as schizophrenic as App basketball.

Comment by DRM 03.09.10 @ 2:27 pm

Comment by appirishmen 03.09.10 @ 4:18 pm

A few notes after a day to think about this:

1) Wofford was the conference’s best team all year. No surprise that they won it. However, they blew an 18-point lead and, had it not been for our inability to shoot FTS, might well have lost on a night when we couldn’t throw it in the ocean.

2) Wofford and academics? You’re kidding, right? Someone should publish the percentage of Wofford students on some sort of athletic scholarship. WC is like a lot of expensive small schools. Scholarships for athletics pay the bill for a student body laden with jocks. Furman and Davidson it ain’t.

3) I’m still not Buzz’s biggest fan, but all things considered, I think he had a good (not great) year. He can coach, as evidenced by his turning Butts into something resembling a basketball player and by Hunter’s resurgence. He got to the championship game which is something Fancher never did. Now, can he get us the rest of the way to the NCAAs?

4) Let us again remember that old saying: “the sun don’t shine on one dog’s er, butt all the time.” Or in Wofford’s case, “A dog’s butt all the time….” Next year is likely to be different in basketball and we may be in dire need of it after football season which might also be VERY different for us.

Finally, any time W&M and ASU play for a championship on the same night, I’m going to need to lock up my liquor cabinet–win or lose.

Comment by Appnaysayer 03.09.10 @ 5:39 pm

App football will be different this year regardless. Hopefully, not ‘bad’ different.

Comment by Dan 03.09.10 @ 5:43 pm

“to wofford, congrats on the win. you out played us from the get go. you won the conference and you deserved the win. i was wondering when the old app team would be back and there they were. but to say that app is a bunch of hillbillies and that our school sucks and yours is so much better academically, get real. Well the hillbilly thing was just in fun and a retort to the guy that said all Wofford students are dumb spoiled kids living off their parent’s money. We’re rivals, it’s college sports, some name calling is going to happen – that’s how it is.

As far as the US College reports go, I’m sure you realized that Wofford is graded in the Liberal Arts category (nationally) and App St. is graded in the University-Master’s category (for the South only), so those rankings mean nothing side by side. They mean we’re the 62nd best liberal arts school in the country and you’re the 8th best Master’s level university in the South.

My Wofford degree has served me fine during my life, I’m sure your App St. degree has served you fine. Both schools have a lot to offer and serve different purposes.

Your guys played tough, made it a close game in the second half, and deserve to be congratulated on their great season.

I was at the massacre in Boone on Halloween – not sure I’ve been to a worse game from a fan perspective, but I had a good time in Boone nonetheless. This win served as a little payback for that and a great step forward for all Wofford athletics.

Go Terriers!

Comment by woffordfan 03.09.10 @ 6:41 pm

62???! And you, Naysayer, even mention them in the same sentence as Furman, much less Davidson, even in a negative vein? This is disappointing. I knew Wofford wasn’t Furman’s equal (and Furman is several academic miles behind Davidson), but I was under the impression they were relatively close.

W&M and Citadel are two of the small handful of schools that have never sent a team to the NCAA basketball tournament, according to the doofusses announcing the W&M – ODU game last night. That’s surprising, given the long athletic history of the two.

You’ve seen more App basketball this year than I have, but from what I’ve seen of Butts I would say BP turned him into something VAGUELY resembling a basketball player. Very vaguely.

Not knocking Buzz, he did a good job in a tough situation, but anybody thinking these 22 W’s was unexpected doesn’t follow SoCon basketball very closely. Combine who we were returning with who was missing from the other guys and this team had 20+ W’s written all over it. Although the transition experience did knock a couple of W’s off the record they got the ship righted and finished the year in semi-fine style. Buzz is now 1-3 in SoCon tournament finals…. (scratches chin and looks puzzled) Hummmmm ???

Comment by AppAttack 03.09.10 @ 11:33 pm

dude they also have WC ranked higher than UNC and Duke. I find that hard to believe academically. like woffordfan said above, the are two completely different types of schools. both strong in their own sort. congrats on the win and best of luck in the big dance.

I like what buzz did to this team. he took an unorganized bunch and turned them around. in a few years when he can get some of his recruits in we will truly see what he can do as a coach.

Comment by appirishmen 03.09.10 @ 11:54 pm

Just one more note. The way that the Wofford section acted as App was on the way to locker room at halftime was horrible. You can see the actions on the tape of the game, but what you can’t hear is what they were saying. There was a lot of cussing, racial slurs, and threats directed at our post players in particular. At least that what I was told today from someone with the team.

Represent the SoCon well Woofie, get us another NCAA victory or 5, but lets up the class the factor at the NCAAs.

Woffordfaniac-
I looked it up and found only the ‘08 ranking on forbes: ASU 250, Wofford 62. But also found US News and World Report, Tier 1 Universities, ASU 8th with a score of 76, Wofford 62nd with a score of 60. There is no use in trying to make a point of this kid. The average SAT scores of the freshman classes are within 9 points of each other, you’re just talking about the difference between schools of 1600 vs. 16,000 and public vs. private. Its just depends on what your metage is.

Jeebus,

Y’all still are stuck on that US report that ranks Wofford the 62nd Liberal Arts school in the NATION, and App State the 8th Master’s Level University in THE SOUTH ONLY. Not exactly a good comparison for you.

But I wouldn’t expect you to understand that.

Comment by woffordfanatic 03.10.10 @ 8:24 am

Don’t think I remember seeing Woofie trash talk on Appfan before, even during football season. Winning seems to bring out the best in some, the worst in others.

Comment by DRM 03.10.10 @ 11:11 am

Any school bragging about being number 62 says more than enough about its fans. I’d still like to see the percentage on how many students get some kind of athletic aid at Wofford. It is now and always has been a jock school. That ASU has comparable SATs and a student body 10X the size of Wofford’s tells you all you need to know about “standards” at this allegedly liberal arts college. When it comes to academics, they’re outgunned by a comprehensive state university with ten times their enrollment.

DRM, W&M has finally done in basketball what I’ve advocated for years: adopt the Princeton offense. Smart kids, tough kids–best offense for that. Lost to a taller more athletic ODU team. ESPN announcers were terrible there, too, as usual. Let Hannah (These Boost Were Made for Walkin’) Storm do the play-by-play.

And W&M has never been to any sort of postseason play. Players usually have to study for finals! So the NIT would be cool.

Comment by appnaysayer 03.11.10 @ 7:43 am

*Boots (Freudian slip)

Comment by appnaysayer 03.11.10 @ 8:04 am

Who knows? “Boost” might be the appropriate word in Hannah’s case.

I watched a bit of the W&M – ODU game. Announcers were horrible, as you say. And though they lost, W&M looked like a better team than App. They should be, I guess, as the CAA is better than the SoCon in basketball, just as it is in football.
