Just how hot is the women’s bball team? Let us count the ways -
- They’ve won seven straight overall
- They’ve won six straight on the road
- They’re in fourth place in the standings, but still alive for a championship
- They have the league’s best shooting offense (46.6%) and shooting defense (36.2%)
- Average 7.1(!) blocks a game, almost double the next highest average in the league
- Guard Sam Ramirez is the SoCon player of the week
Up next is a trip Saturday to league leading ‘Nooga, which won in Boone by seven last month.
Way to go Lady Apps. Keep it up!!!!!!!!!!
Comment by AppTrex77 02.09.10 @ 3:02 pmSomeone on MMB posted that Coach Vincent will donate $1 for every student that wears a pink shirt to the double header coming up. It will go towards fighting breast cancer so get out there, wear some pink, and spread the word. This team deserves a lot of credit for what they have done this year too.
Comment by Dominick 02.09.10 @ 3:10 pmI hope the success continues! 7.1 blocks per game…Buzz you better be taking notes. It would be huge if we could get both the men’s and women’s b-ball teams in the NCAA or NIT tourney. This would go a long way in making a case for the “move up” crowd (midwest). Having successful teams in ALL sports is crucial to this goal and more appealing to FBS conferences when they come calling. Now if Pollard can get the Diamond Apps to show well again (post-season appearance–crosses fingers), the athletic program will be on a roll!!!
Comment by tim 02.09.10 @ 3:15 pmWho would have thought that this late in the season both of our basketball teams would have a shot at the SOCON title! IMPRESSIVE!!!!
Comment by Mike 02.09.10 @ 3:20 pmWhat’s even more impressive is 9 of the 10 on the current roster will be back next year.. From my limited research, it looks like the one senior (Karina Mills) hasn’t received any playing time this year either
And 8 of the 10, will be back in 2 years.. Only 1 Jr on the team..
Comment by Joe 02.09.10 @ 3:33 pmThese Lady Mountaineers are plyaing some fine basketball. Everyone should get to a game. They really impressed me and they are young too. Go APPS!
Comment by SideLine Shooter 02.09.10 @ 5:22 pmThe freshmen are really playing well. Anna Freeman may end up being the recruiting steal of the decade in the state of NC. I was so happy when I heard that Lindsey and Darcie got her to sign as I had watched my team battle hers for 4 years.
Comment by Rick 02.09.10 @ 6:05 pmWith a small roster of only ten players this means that Coach Vincent can bring in even more talent during the off-season. I think she can sign up to four new players. With more depth next season I think it’s only a matter of time before the program goes back to the Cadillac days of the 90’s under Linda Robinson.
Comment by Flashman 02.09.10 @ 6:26 pmnot to throw water on the womens BB….just wondered how many hundred they averaged in attendance?
Comment by Dcocny 02.09.10 @ 7:02 pmIf you haven’t seen the women play, you should get out to a game. What Vincent has done with the team from last year to this is nothing short of amazing.
Attendance is not good at the moment, but I envision a return to the crowds of the Linda Robinson era before long.
Comment by appnaysayer 02.09.10 @ 7:14 pmAmen appnaysayer! I think this is the most talent I’ve seen on the girls team since the Valerie Whiteside days.
Comment by Rick 02.10.10 @ 1:37 amThe women’s basketball team has come close to hot since Michelle Conklin was on the team. Schwing!

Comment by Avatar 02.10.10 @ 6:40 pmI am an App grad and a sports journalist. Anna Freeman is from Davidson County just like our boy Matt Kline. I watched her throughout her high school career at East Davidson and wrote numerous game stories on her team. She was the most talented, yet unselfish, player I have seen male or female from our area in some time. She was a big steal for the Lady Apps as there should be some very upset ACC coaches that decided not to offer her a scholarship. Awesome job to all those Lady ‘Neers and good luck the rest of the season.
