Cline?

Comment by Always an AppFan 11.24.09 @ 9:39 pm

SERIOUSLY! Where is CLINE?

Comment by David 11.24.09 @ 9:43 pm

I am surprised to see Jorden and not Cline

Comment by Ry_ATO 11.24.09 @ 9:44 pm

I know this isnt’t the correct thread, but does anyone know what happened to the ASU video game highlights? I always looked forward to watching them. The preview for last years playoffs is one of my favorites.

Comment by Pat 11.24.09 @ 9:46 pm

Have to agree with the Cline questions here. I mean if we didn’t have Cline where would we be today? We’ve heard his name more than any other besides AE.

Comment by herbstreitsucks 11.24.09 @ 10:08 pm

How did Jorden make first team with 191 receiving yards on 11 catches and 1 td. when last year he had 506 yard and 6 tds. Cline has 750 yards on 66 receptions. I just don’t see how this happened. I think Jorden is a good TE but Cline has been a stand out this year.

Comment by Ry_ATO 11.24.09 @ 10:19 pm

I guess it’s just the position. I guess Jorden was the best SoCon TE, still not sure how Cline could not make the WR list.

Comment by herbstreitsucks 11.24.09 @ 10:42 pm

Cline got robbed!!! Cline saved our season with some help from AE. Where is the love?? OH did JM forget to submit his name?? He forgot to play AE on senior day sooooo?

Comment by Darian 11.24.09 @ 10:43 pm

It’s not often I’m speechless, but I simply cannot find the words to address Cline being left off this list.

Comment by yosef83 11.24.09 @ 11:01 pm

Darian – the article stated that coaches couldn’t vote for their own players.

Comment by yosef83 11.24.09 @ 11:03 pm

Fleetwood – Roman is not up for the Buchanan award. LeGree is.

Comment by yosef83 11.24.09 @ 11:07 pm

Maybe Cline will be voted onto the media team.

Comment by yosef83 11.24.09 @ 11:15 pm

Yeah they certainly forgot about Cline. It is good to see Coco did not get looked over though.

Who cares about the individual honors, lets go get another Championship!

Go Neers

Comment by psl48 11.24.09 @ 11:16 pm

I understand that Jorden was selected at TE, but surely they select more than one WR for first team, right? I think Cline has had a better year than Hudgins. But that is a biased opinion; I cannot lie!!

Comment by Derek 11.24.09 @ 11:27 pm

Clines numbers are better than Coco’s and I think they would be better even if he didnt get hurt. He has twice the receptions and more yards. Not discounting Coco but making a case for Cline to be atleast second team.

Comment by Ry_ATO 11.24.09 @ 11:30 pm

I was glad to see 4 of our guys on the all-Freshman team as well. The only school with more that 4 was The Citadel with 5. To have 4 on an 8-0 championship squad is stronger than an acre of garlic. The future looks bright once again!

Comment by yosef83 11.24.09 @ 11:35 pm

On Yosef83’s comment

The future looks hotter than a donkey’s tongue in a pepper patch!

Comment by psl48 11.24.09 @ 11:47 pm

It’s absolutely ridiculous that Cline is not at least second team…he had better a better season than anyone in the conference other than Hudgins, and only because Hudgins is on an offense that throws the ball 50-60 times a game…and I’m glad to see Ben Jorden got it at TE, i mean they didn’t throw him the ball but he can’t control that, so at least someone else noticed how open he is every game!

Comment by Allen89 11.25.09 @ 1:06 am

sounds a lot like 07 when batichon was snubbed….more yards receiving and more receptions than Dexter but dex makes 1st team batichon got nothing…

Comment by parking lot 11.25.09 @ 2:33 am

Yeah guys I agree that Cline was more of a standout this year than Jordan for sure, I remember Jordan last year and how much he was in just about every play, to my knowledge he was not used that much this year, and Cline was by far more productive than Jordan, I played tight end at Appalachian from 92-95 but never did have the numbers of Cline or Jordan, I can honestly say Cline should have been on the 1st team, was Jordan even on 1st or 2nd team last year with the great season he had? Let’s get ready for the playoff’s crush SCS on Satuday and then move on to hopefully playing Elon again at home, if not traveling to Richmond will be a true test of what we are made of for sure and there is nothing like “Revenge”…..

Comment by asu1995 11.25.09 @ 2:57 am

Congrats guys!!! Thanks for making all of our Saturdays so special…… The APP family appreciates what you have done for our wonderful university….. And Matt Cline should know that his efforts and performace this year have not gone unnoticed from the fans….He is a HUGE part of our SoCon championship!!! A first teamer in my book

Comment by LP APPFAN 11.25.09 @ 7:57 am

Coaches tend to base these awards on career achievements more than what they did this year. Cline’s more deserving of being an all-conference receiver based off of this year than Coco but, I can’t argue against Hudgins, Roberts, and Cooper. Those players are more important to their respective teams than Cline is to ours.

Comment by clayton 11.25.09 @ 8:03 am

Are you kidding Clayton. I mean we know AE is our MVP but to say that those players are more important to their team than Cline is ours. If Cline didn’t play this year where would have all those passes gone.

We know that Coco had a slow start, Quick couldn’t run his routes and AE found Cline to be his “Clutch” reciever when his typical guys weren’t doing their job.

On this blog we’ve definitly talked more about Cline than any other receiver and sometimes more than AE. He even got a nickname because of his great hands and ability.

In my opinion Cline’s name should have been dropped where Coco’s name is on second team, but I have a hard time thinking he should not be close to first team. Especially after watching Hudgins suck wind at Elon.

Comment by herbstreitsucks 11.25.09 @ 8:17 am

And Cline doesn’t pound his chest after every catch.

Comment by appnaysayer 11.25.09 @ 8:38 am

So Vitaris is an all-conference player but Matt Clutch is not?

Breaking News:
The SoCon has just announced that each member of the all-conference team is also going to receive a Nobel Peace Prize.

Comment by appfantoo 11.25.09 @ 8:40 am

It should not surprise anyone that the coaches forgot about Cline. They all forgot to put a DB on him all year. He got snubbed for 2nd team, but congrats to CoCo.
And good ol’ 50/50 made it, too.

Comment by Gwaltineer 11.25.09 @ 8:54 am

Good point Gwalt. “We don’t need to put anybody on the big white guy.” Maybe if he had a catchy name like Coco coaches would have remembered him.

Comment by herbstreitsucks 11.25.09 @ 9:05 am

asu1995,

yes Jorden was first team last year too, and he couldn’t have as good of a season because the ball wasn’t thrown his way.

But Cline should be on there regarless. And why are people comparing Cline’s and Jorden’s stats, they don’t play the same position!

Comment by Allen89 11.25.09 @ 9:11 am

Is it possible that some coaches voted for Vitaris because he kept some of them in football games that should have been blowouts? Seriously, though..is he the second best kicker in the league?

I’m not sure we would have won at The Citadel without Cline. I think we’re 8-3, maybe even 7-4 without him. He has been the one constant for AE this season.

Comment by Keith 11.25.09 @ 9:15 am

My 2 cents:

1. Coco as a receiver over Cline? Really? Has anyone else been watching Appalachian State football this season?

2. Mr. 50% Jason Vitaris as an all-conference? How bad were the other kickers? Was he up against Ray Finkle?

3. Glad to see our defense getting some credit for all of the hard work they have put in this season. While there have been some lapses, this has been a much improved unit late in the season.

4. This proves it: Armanti Edwards + Devon Moore = MOST DOMINANT BACKFIELD IN THE FCS.

Comment by Jamey 11.25.09 @ 9:22 am

actually Jamey, I hope that holding a piece of hardware in Nooga after putting up 50 points proves that.

Comment by Dan 11.25.09 @ 9:32 am

I am actually ok with Cline not getting mentioned — not because he doesn’t deserve it (we all know he does!), but because he will be back next year and if the coaches don’t see him as a threat, I don’t care who the QB is — Cline will be a beast!

Comment by Joe 11.25.09 @ 9:33 am

Good pt. Gwalt – the ONLY team to put an effective Defense on Cline was, of all people, WCU. They handled that bubble screen that we use with Cline. That, coupled with AE’s absence, made last Sat’s game Cline’s quietest. I’ll bet he’ll be back in a big way this week.

Wouldn’t it be something if Cline makes 1st team on the media selection after not placing on the coaches team?

Comment by yosef83 11.25.09 @ 9:39 am

is it Saturday yet?

Comment by Gwaltineer 11.25.09 @ 10:05 am

Yosef83,
Another reason Cline was limited Saturday was because of Cadet’s limited throwing ability. Cadet may not be the starting QB next year. Jamal Jackson has a very good arm and I believe he was red-shirted this year, saving him to be a 4 year starter. Cadet will have strong competition for the starting job next year.

Comment by The Earl 11.25.09 @ 10:18 am

Jamey…you sir are awarded the best post of the year award…oh, and a Nobel Peace Prize. You had me laughing out loud because of that post. Loved the Ray Finkle line! hahaha

Comment by Dominick 11.25.09 @ 10:21 am

You’re right Earl. I was gonna put something on there about how things would’ve been different had AE been playing. Cline is definitely his “go to” guy.

Boy, FanFest next year will be interesting won’t it? Everyone will be focused on the QB position it looks like.

Comment by yosef83 11.25.09 @ 10:27 am

Yeah Dominick, I really enjoy reading Jamey’s stuff on here as well. I wish he could’ve been at the AppFan tailgate last Saturday so I could meet him.

BTW, how was the wedding Jamey? (Just kiddin, man.)

Comment by yosef83 11.25.09 @ 10:32 am

The wedding was pretty solid. You will all be happy to know that I did have someone texting me the scoring updates throughout the ceremony. God I love technology. Sucks that I missed the tailgate last week, but I am gonna be rolling up this weekend ready to freeze my butt off while we knows SC State out for the 2nd year in a row.

Comment by Jamey 11.25.09 @ 10:41 am

I’m with Gwalt. Is it Saturday yet. Bring on the cold weather, hot choclate and a butt whipping by Cline and AE!

Comment by herbstreitsucks 11.25.09 @ 10:50 am

Hudgins, Roberts, and Blue are all the best players on their respective teams.

Hudgins: 111 receptions 1466 yards 15 TDs
Roberts: 77 receptions 792 yards 8 TDs
Blue: 84 receptions 824 yards 7 TDs
Cline: 66 receptions 750 yards 1 TD

For whatever reason, we haven’t thrown the ball in the redzone with much success.

Comment by clayton 11.25.09 @ 11:57 am

Clayton, I think “whatever reason” can be found under 1st Team SoCon: Edwards & Moore.

Cline is like the red-headed stepchild that gets us to the 20 and then has to go sit in the corner. Lucky for all of us, the kid is a team player and understands that a TD is 6 points no matter who scores it. (7 if Finkle sneaks one through for us on the point-after)

Comment by Jamey 11.25.09 @ 12:03 pm

Finkle is einhorn and vitaris!

Comment by appcaniac 11.25.09 @ 1:23 pm

No way Vitaris and Jorden should be on this list.

Comment by appfanmidwest 11.25.09 @ 2:56 pm

2 Questions:
Is our special teams coach Roger Pedactor?

If Vitaris was the 2nd team kicker, did SNOWFLAKE make 1st team?

Comment by Jamey 11.25.09 @ 3:22 pm

Looks like Cline got snubbed again.

Comment by herbstreitsucks formerly grudensucks 11.25.09 @ 9:08 pm

Its just wrong. Cline deserves so much more credit than this. Matt Clutch gets 100 yds and a TD, beating SCST.
