Obligatory App State bball mention

Now with less gold!!!Yeah, yeah, yeah. The biggest SoCon football game in recent memory is Saturday, but prior to kickoff is the tipoff of the App State bball season.

That’s right! It’s Friday I’m in love when UNC Wilmington heads west to take on coach Buzz Peterson’s second first App State squad.

“There is a lot of excitement on my part to get back into coaching after two years away,” Peterson said. “The bottom line is totally different than it was 13 years ago and took this same job. Now, I have a mind set to lay a strong foundation where this program will graduate players and build a program for coaches in the future.”

Asked about the top teams in the league, the coach responded, “Davidson is Davidson. Chattanooga is Chattanooga. Samford’s tough, and the College of Charleston has a lot of people back. It’s a tough conference.”

Hmmmm … Seems he forgot someone.

In other bball news, the team is sporting a slightly different uniform look. In short, less gold. (We’re sure there’s a joke there somewhere).

Speaking of which, here’s the coach last week on his early priority.

“The one thing I’m trying to get these guys to understand is to value the ball. That’s the biggest thing. We have turned it over too much. We can’t have that.

Yikes!

Got my invite phone call from Buzz Monday night for the game friday. I will be at the game Saturday against ETSU in Johnson City.

Ho hum. I didn’t know ASU still played basketball. :)

I lied I won’t be there. I didn’t realize the football game was going to be on tv.

Forget basketball, at least until January! Charlotte Observer article about O-line recruits coming to App:

Appalachian football recruiting is stepping up
Time was, and a recent time it was, when Appalachian State, like every other FCS school (the coaches still call them I-AAs), had to wait until the big boys had finalized their class of commitments before the FCS programs could cull through the leftovers.

Invariably, borderline talents would wait to see if an offer would come from an N.C. State or a Clemson before finally settling for a Furman or an Elon.

The Mountaineers, though, are shaking up that strategy this season, simply by making kids want to come to Boone.

They already have three verbal commitments—all big offensive linemen—after their addition this week of Butler High’s Kendall Lamm. Lamm, at 6-foot-6 and 265 pounds, joins Graham Fisher (6-2, 275) and Kalan Jones (6-4, 275).

All of these players were on the watchlists of some major schools, but decided they’d rather remove the uncertainty and go ahead and commit to coach Jerry Moore’s program.

By doing so, they can be almost certain of three things. They will have a chance to play early ( ASU will have as many as five slots for OLs in its incoming class), play for a national championship, and play in Boone. None of these are bad options.
This kind of thing can snowball. Appalachian, with its three national titles in four years, is in a unique position among FCS schools. Now it’s taking advantage of it.

Glad to see we are going to have a Butler Bulldog in the line up.

I’ve heard of Butner, but not Butler–where is that school?

Is it the Butler from TN? Thanks for posting DRM. I’m pretty excited about basketball this year…will go to some games.

Really like the new uniforms too.

David W. Butler High School is in Matthews, NC. They have had one of the top 5 football teams in NC the last few years. The school hasn’t been around to long. I was in the first graduating class in ‘99.

Definately not in TN.

That does not sound like he is planning on being around for the next ten or so years. Is Buzz already planning on pursuing other coaching gigs? It sounds to me like he is not committed while talking out of both sides of his mouth. I supported his hiring, but not if he lacks committment.

CLT vs GBO–which airport is favored?

Oh, and let me say this: I’m VERY pleased to see App recruiting some TALLer O-linemen. By the time the Butler kid is a junior, he should be up around 310, which for a 6′ 6″ guy is definitely not fat. The 6′ 4″ guy could probably carry another 20 or 30 pounds, too. Size (in both dimensions, height and weight) is something we’ve lacked in recent years, with the exception of Kerry Brown.

parking lot, Butler High is in Matthews, right outside of Charlotte.

Buzz called me on Monday, wouldn’t let me get a word in edgewise.

And.

Matthews is a cesspool.
