Meet a Mountaineer: Travaris Cadet
Monday August 24th 2009, 3:58 pm

The right stuff? With 11 days until kickoff, we’re gonna try to focus daily on a different App we can’t wait to see in action!

NO. 7 – TRAVARIS CADET

POSITION: Quarterback

VITALS: 6-1, 210 pounds. Sophomore.

FALLING INTO HIS ROLE: Cadet is turning some heads in camp, suggesting there may be some real competition for the No. 2 spot behind AE. One goasu report credits him with a 70-yard TD run in one scrimmage. He also looked pretty good at Saturday’s Fan Fest.

HIGH SCHOOL HYPE: Cadet was considered a three-star recruit out of high school, and one website ranked him the country’s 19th best dual-threat quarterback. Among the schools to recruit him were Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Baylor, North Carolina and South Florida. Most wanted him to be a WR. (Sound familiar?)

FAILURE TO LAUNCH: Though he originally committed to Minnesota, Cadet eventually signed with Toledo. He was redshirted as a Rocket receiver. He left there to attend Pearl River CC in Mississippi, where he played two games at WR before a season-ending ankle injury.

CALLING KEVIN BACON: Cadet started his career at Toledo, which this season now boasts of a former App State QB.

WELCOME TO MIAMI: Playing for Miami Central, he threw for 1,391 yards, ran for 450 and scored 15 TDs as a senior.

Couple of things…

1. By many accounts, he’s having a great camp and is pushing Deandre for the #2 job. But, Deandre was voted most improved player. That confuses me.

2. Committed to Minnesota, signed with Toledo, redshirted, transferred to a community college, got hurt, came here. That bothers me.

But, he did look good on Saturday.

At 6′1 210 pounds … sounds like he is going to be a force and he has speed!!!

Comment by asu7 08.24.09 @ 4:27 pm

the whole 3 different schools injury thing is a little worrysome for me as well….
again….no. 7….still weird for me, especially as a QB

Comment by parking lot 08.24.09 @ 4:32 pm

deandre is no. 2 he is no. 7

2×7=14

maybe the math adds up for another championship!

Comment by asu7 08.24.09 @ 4:37 pm

Most improved player from last year doesn’t mean he’s the BEST QB on the team!

DP has a pretty solid arm. Accuracy wasn’t quite there last year. What kind of arm does this kid have?

As for multiple teams, I would blame the coaching staff, not the player. He was probably told he would play QB (just to get him to sign) and then told he would move to WR.

No worries here….i say, “Welcome to the Rock, Travaris!”

Comment by Jason 08.24.09 @ 5:13 pm

never seen him play…….but if the coaches put him ahead of DP, I like him already!

Comment by jh 08.24.09 @ 5:51 pm

WE IS STACKED AT DAT QB POSEISH MO FOS!!!!

Comment by random dude 08.24.09 @ 6:55 pm

The best thing that could have happened was for someone to come in and put pressure on DP for the #2 spot – it can only make both Pressley and Cadet better to have a closer-than-expected competition for the backup role.

Comment by appfantoo 08.24.09 @ 7:55 pm

I say play the best man…if Cadet is the guy, then start him vs. ECU.

Comment by appfanmidwest 08.24.09 @ 7:55 pm

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/story/905175.html

This story has some interesting quotes and things in it… it does mention that Cadet has been taking most of the 1st team snaps at QB in AE’s absence. Has Cadet already taken the #2 spot??

Comment by appstategrad2008 08.24.09 @ 8:30 pm

Well I think you guys should just leave the guy alone.Yea he moved around a little but are you perfect we all make mistakes.Thats to you Clayton. And to you ” asu7″.. He can have whatever number he wants to have. I havent seen your field and your talking crap

Comment by Linda 08.24.09 @ 9:39 pm

The reality is that teams will make all kinds of promises to kids out of high school. Coaches will tell them they will start at QB in two years knowing they either want to move them to WR or safety or just to keep them out of the hands of the competition. Give the man a chance to prove himself.

Comment by appfanmidwest 08.24.09 @ 10:03 pm

Whoa there Linda. This here is what we call a message board. People make comments and opinions. No need to jump all over people for expressing concern. We all want to see Cadet perform well on the field wherever that is.

Comment by andrew 08.24.09 @ 10:50 pm

do not let the amount of schools he has transfered boggle your mind. things happen for a reason… remember every school has different needs to fill. toledo may not have had the need for him or maybe he needed to mature as a football player. being from baton rouge, LA and going to school in the mississippi juco system i know pearl river has a great football program. everyone needs to do their part for the Mountaineers be successful. you should only worry about his past work ethic. and apparently if he is backing up AE he has learned the system and become reliable.

geaux cadet

Comment by chris c 08.25.09 @ 2:21 am

I said “worries me” I didn’t say he was a terrorist.

Comment by clayton 08.25.09 @ 5:24 am

If he has issues, then coach Moore will straighten him out. He has proven that he does not put up with nonsense. I say give the guy a chance and let’s see what he’s made of before we pass judgement.

Comment by appfanmidwest 08.25.09 @ 7:27 am

You can bet that if Toledo, or anyone else, had major character issues with him he would not be playing at App right now (reference Michigan kid that wanted to transfer to App a few weeks back).

You have to trust that our coaches do their due diligence when allowing a transfer to come into the system.

Comment by appfantoo 08.25.09 @ 8:23 am

Linda I like the fact he has no. 7 … Did you not read all my message?

2×7=14 maybe the math adds up to a championship? can’t you see that I was just messing around?

Hey Linda try decaf …

Comment by asu7 08.25.09 @ 8:23 am

I’m thinking decaf won’t be enough for Linda – valium may be in order.

Comment by appfantoo 08.25.09 @ 8:35 am

My concerns with DP and Cadet is strictly confidence going into the ECU opener. Will they have it? If not were doomed!

Comment by jh 08.25.09 @ 8:49 am

clayton…did you make a new friend?

How often have we been able to say that ASU has 3 QB’s that coaches feel can handle running our offense? Anyone, Anyone, Bueller? Whether it is 14, 2, 7 or BR-549…I just want the man that is most capable to effectively move the chains to take snaps against ECU.

Hell…I am just glad we are down to 11 days. And to those who offered tickets for me and the wife….Thanks….WE GOT SOME AND WE WILL BE AT ECU COME SEPTEMBER 5TH!

Comment by Jamey 08.25.09 @ 9:15 am

Wow Jamey, BR-549?! The only other person i’ve ever heard make that reference is my dad. Honestly.

Comment by Dan 08.25.09 @ 9:40 am

DP was wearing the red jersey on Saturday. I think he’ll be the starter at ECU. Cadet did look good though.

Comment by Chard 08.25.09 @ 9:59 am

Midwest and appfantoo are correct, I’d say–if this kid had real character issues, he wouldn’t be at App in the first place. JM wouldn’t allow it.

Comment by DRM 08.25.09 @ 10:12 am

The struggle of the dual-threat QB to be taken seriously at the QB position has led to more transfers than Charlie Weis and Rich Rodriguez combined. I would not read too much into the number of schools. Moore and his staff are tight on character and work ethic, and Cadet seems to have tickled their fancy on both.

By the way……11 DAYS AND WE GET SOME FOOTBALL!

Comment by Jamey 08.25.09 @ 10:53 am

Changing your mind on a school choice and/or transferring is becoming more common with today’s athlete but, it’s still something I’d want to keep an eye on and it’s not something I like. I never crown a player until I see him in a few games.

Comment by clayton 08.25.09 @ 12:11 pm

Hey Clayton. How bout you suck a fat one! Leave the Kid alone. Jeez!!! I dont recall a person transferring equating to them being a worst player than those that dont. He had to find the right fit. Hey Guys Im beginning to think that Clayton here is Anti- Cadet….. Screw you Clayton

Comment by Linda 08.25.09 @ 12:42 pm

Linda, are you perhaps my crazy bus driver from elementary school?

Shudder.

Comment by Pfaff 08.25.09 @ 12:50 pm

Clayton, I can’t remember when you’ve caused so much controversy, albeit seemingly in the mind of only one poster.

Comment by DRM 08.25.09 @ 12:53 pm

Linda is a nut, fo sho!

Comment by jh 08.25.09 @ 12:54 pm

Linda should play QB

Comment by Gwaltineer 08.25.09 @ 1:41 pm

But only if shes never transferred before ;)

Comment by Joe 08.25.09 @ 1:42 pm

Linda…do you by chance know Opie? I think you two could be a match made in heaven.

Comment by Jamey 08.25.09 @ 1:48 pm

Was just listening to Frank & Buck on WFNZ 610AM in Charlotte….Brentson Buckner is also saying that he has heard Armanti is still experiencing bleeding after walking around and will likely be out of the lineup against ECU. He is of the school of thought that we should hold him out until at least week #2 to make sure he is ready for FCS play.

Looks like DP or TC are gonna be QB.

Comment by Jamey 08.25.09 @ 1:50 pm

Well at least we know she is fired up … Maybe we should send her to Washington to get our stimulus checks!

Comment by asu7 08.25.09 @ 2:25 pm

and btw Linda … Cadet has more posts than any other player to this point! Even more than Superman’s story about saving a woman’s life.

Just saying …

Comment by asu7 08.25.09 @ 2:27 pm

That hurt my feelings, Linda.

Comment by clayton 08.25.09 @ 3:22 pm

Linda is away so i thought i would answer for her Clayton……. She said GOOD… I hope your feelings hurt as bad as AE’s Foot did when he cut it !!!!!!!!! NA NA NANA NAh !!

Comment by sec111 08.25.09 @ 3:37 pm

It does hurt that bad. It is a deep burn.

Comment by clayton 08.25.09 @ 4:10 pm

Man, I’m really getting in trouble with these Meet a Mountaineer things.

Comment by clayton 08.25.09 @ 4:18 pm

You know in this picture of Travaris, the look on his face to me says: What college am I at now? Do I hear banjo music?

Comment by grudensucks 08.25.09 @ 4:31 pm

Linda – do you kiss your mother with that mouth?

Comment by BeauFoster 08.25.09 @ 8:31 pm

I truly believe Armanti will be ready to play vs. ECU, but I hope Cadet gets a chance to play. I’d consider starting him just to shake things up. He may surprise everyone! At least let the guy return some kicks or play receiver.

Comment by appfanmidwest 08.25.09 @ 10:16 pm

I doubt that the coaching staff would insert Cadet except for a few special plays. He hasn’t had enough time to know our offense well enough to use in a game situation that well. Could play more if AE out and DP gets injured, but would be very restricted in what plays he could run.

Comment by FBS time at ASU 08.26.09 @ 9:52 am

cadet is way better then dp and when ae leave it gonna be all up to him
