From the website for the Jacksonville Jaguars, a question on AE and a possible future in the wildcat option – “I love him. He may be the most dominant and exciting football player I’ve ever seen. If there’s a place in the NFL for Tebow, then there has to be a place for Armanti Edwards.”
Jacksonville love for Armanti! Hell yeah!
Nice to see Vic mention Armanti in the same breath as Tebow–living in Jacksonville (and also being a huge FSU fan), I’m sooooooo sick of hearing about Tebow (even though, admittedly and begrudgingly, he is a great college player). Vic’s comments are sure to raise the ire of all the Gator fans here (which is a good thing, heh heh).
GO APPS!!!! GO ARMANTI (and stay away from lawnmowers)!!!!
Comment by APPle Jax 08.19.09 @ 11:28 amI like his lawn care advice as well.
Comment by Gwaltineer 08.19.09 @ 11:34 amI always like the Armanti, Tebow comparison; especially in 2007. It was Tebow’s Hiesman campain
but AE stats were almost equal and against their only common foe Michigan. AE had more yards rushing, passing, better completition pecentage and guided a 60 yard drive in the closing minutes to close the deal. Tebow was four and out on Florida’s last drive ….witch sealed the deal for Michigan.
The true issue is 50 lbs of body weight….not talent.
Great post Pete. I totally agree but would add 3 inches in height to the 50lbs comment.
Comment by Mike 08.19.09 @ 3:14 pmArmanti’s main hurdle to the same stature as Tebow is really the level of competition he faces week in and week out. As far as Florida’s game against UM, I would say they were a very different team at that time than when we played them, I doubt we would have been able to pull the upset that day.
Comment by Dan 08.19.09 @ 3:36 pmDon’t disagree the SEC et al…is stiffer competition than SoCon et al. Armanti and ASU
most impressive work to me was 12 FCS playoff games in a row with a win over Joe Flaco and the Blue Hens.
Michigan wanted the win for Lloyd Carr that day….but they were the same players….8 were drafted.
I don’t like Tim Tebow. There, I said it.
Comment by clayton 08.19.09 @ 4:48 pmMe, either.
But some would say Tebow is Florida’s version of Corey Lynch (in terms of character, that is–clearly, Tebow is superior to Lynch in terms of athletic ability).
Comment by DRM 08.19.09 @ 6:31 pmTebow is also the football equivalent of Tyler Hansbrough, in terms of over-exposure.
Comment by Dan 08.19.09 @ 8:51 pmLike him or not, Tebow is a winner and has the skills to be a QB in the NFL. Armanti is simply not tall enough to QB in the NFL. He could, however, be a great receiver. I would like to see Armanti play receiver some this year. It gives Deandre some reps while giving Armanti more opportunities to be the playmaker that he is.
Comment by appfanmidwest 08.19.09 @ 9:20 pmIt will be interesting to see if that’s how we use him in the ECU game. Really don’t see him starting at the QB position but can’t really see him not playing either.
Comment by Dominick 08.19.09 @ 9:22 pmhave you app fans lost your minds? Armanti couldnt hold Tebows jock
Comment by piratefan09 08.19.09 @ 9:30 pmExcuse me, pirate fan, but Tim Tebow IS Armanti’s jock!
Comment by Jason 08.19.09 @ 10:10 pmtebow and armanti is like comparing apples to oranges. It’s like comparing a fullback to a wide receiver.
Comment by appfanmidwest 08.19.09 @ 10:32 pmtebow’s a virgin
Comment by parking lot 08.19.09 @ 10:42 pmTebow’s moving Armonti’s lawn
Comment by Gwaltineer 08.20.09 @ 7:56 amluckily for us, Pinkney couldn’t hold Armanti’s jock.
Comment by Dan 08.20.09 @ 8:14 amRemember who started this comparison…NFL writer
based in Florida..!
Both these guys will have to be selected by a team and staff that is pretty creative to make a
career in the NFL.
Armanti (pound for pound) is the better player, but football is not a pound for pound game. His skills may actually be more comparable to M. Vick than Tebow.
Pinckney is going to be collecting Social Security before his graduation date…so let’s keep him outta the equation. I hate it when people pick on the elderly.
AE is the better ATHLETE in terms of the Edwards v. Tebow debate. He faster and more elusive. I would say their arms are comparable. The key will be finding a way to use them in the NFL. AE reminds me of a combo between Mike Vick and Desean Jackson is Philly. He can run, he can throw…and I think he will learn quickly to catch. A dangerous man if used properly.
Comment by Jamey 08.20.09 @ 10:27 amSo why are pirate fans so concerned about our Armanti, except that they should be worried if he plays. They really won’t know until gameday. Read and watch the film on Armanti. That should say enough! He’s got the talent (if 100% healthy) to play in the NFL. GO APPS!!
Comment by Striker 08.20.09 @ 10:40 amIt is interesting that someone who thihnks this game is going to be a walk-over for ECU spends so much time here trashing our team. Someone sure is insecure.
Comment by Dan 08.20.09 @ 10:55 amThat’s exactly on point, Dan. The only logical explanation for all the trash talking ECU fans are bringing to Appfan.com is that they’re more worried about September 5 than they’d like to admit. And that really makes no sense–they’ll be at home, the weather will be warmer and muggier than ASU’s team is accustomed to, and they have an offensive and defensive unit worth of extra scholarships. In addition, they’re probably noticeably bigger, on average, than App’s players, and–unlike Michigan–they’re probably our equal or better in the overall team speed department. Further, even if Edwards plays, there’s no way he will be 100 percent, either in physical or mental preparation. I’ve said all along that this game is far more important for ECU than for ASU, primarily because of the embarrassment that would accompany an upset loss for them. If we lose, especially if we keep it close, there will be zero embarrassment, and a respectable loss will have no effect on our hopes for a fourth national championship.
As for spreading Armanti out with Deandre at QB (whether for ECU or other games), that makes absolutely no sense to me. Why would we risk getting our best QB–probably the best ever at ASU–injured by gimmicking our offense? If we need to get reps for Deandre, and we probably do, it would be far wiser to just rotate QBs now and then, letting Presley have some game time with the first team offensive unit. Edwards is a fantastic athlete, certainly, but we have some very athletic (and bigger) players who are already accustomed to playing the wide-out position; we don’t need to waste Armanti’s talents in a position where he isn’t guaranteed to touch the ball every play.
Comment by DRM 08.20.09 @ 1:39 pmDRM, you make good points about Armanti at wide out, but don’t forget, we did that a couple of times last year and DeAndre wasn’t nearly as experienced/comfortable as he is now.
Comment by Dan 08.20.09 @ 1:47 pmYes, I know. And by no means am I saying plays within such a formation wouldn’t be dangerous. If we show them a few times, it might also give future opposition something extra to prepare for. But, to me the risks outweigh the potential rewards.
Maybe I’m just too conservative, but when I’m head coach I’m keeping Edwards where he belongs–about five to seven yards behind center!
Comment by DRM 08.20.09 @ 2:52 pmYou’re “risking injury” every time Armanti is on the field. You’re “risking injury” every time any player is on the field. If anything, putting Armanti at wideout for a few snaps would lower his chance for injury because, he could be a decoy for the defense. If Chad Pennington can line up at receiver so Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams can run, Armanti can too.
Comment by clayton 08.20.09 @ 3:35 pmThat’s fine DRM, so long as Armanti isn’t 5 yards deep in his own end-zone taking snaps after an interception anymore.
Comment by Dan 08.20.09 @ 4:04 pmAny player on the field is risking injury, Clayton. The relevant point is whether there is adequate reward for splitting Edwards out–at very best, it’s 50-50 that he’ll even touch the ball in that situation, and those odds assume we throw to him on every play.
And decoying Edwards so someone else can run? We don’t have a runner with a greater combination of elusiveness and explosiveness than Edwards. If the idea is to run, he’s the best we’ve got–just give the ball to him on the snap.
Comment by DRM 08.20.09 @ 4:15 pmIf he’s at QB, he will be five yards deep, no matter where we are on the field. That’s one thing I don’t completely understand about our offense–why don’t we have a few under-center alignments for situations such as the one you mention, Dan, as well as for when we’re three yards from the opponent’s end zone?
Comment by DRM 08.20.09 @ 4:19 pmI’m all for adding wrinkles to the offense. Splitting Armanti out wide is another wrinkle. One more thing for the defense to think about.
Comment by clayton 08.20.09 @ 4:32 pmYep, that’s true–something else for the opponents to think about. If we do that, I’d rather do it with Armanti as a complete decoy (with maybe a couple fake throws his way for a bit of realism), and preferably against weaker opponents.
If we’re playing a tougher team, I prefer the ball in Edwards’ hands every single play, as long as he’s 90 – 100 percent healthy. Nothing against Presley (or Cadet or any of those other new guys). It’s just that none of them are close to being Armanti.
Comment by DRM 08.20.09 @ 5:14 pmyou app fans are making me scared. I just realized that if armanti is at qb we have no chance.
Comment by piratefan09 08.20.09 @ 7:40 pmhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUZiiWLECsc
Comment by piratefan09 08.20.09 @ 7:41 pmAre you kidding? Tim Tebow wears Armanti Edwards pajamas!!! Screw ECU.
Comment by Appfan12 08.20.09 @ 8:20 pmTake it with a grain of salt Appfan12, remember, this guy is a fan of a team whose QB will be eligible for social security in about 4 years.
Comment by Dan 08.20.09 @ 8:39 pmand you are a fan of a team whose qb doesnt know how to mow grass
Comment by piratefan09 08.20.09 @ 9:36 pmMaybe not, but he knows how to mow down opposing defenses, so good luck to your girly-colored pirates.
Comment by Dan 08.21.09 @ 8:22 amIn one sense, you guys have no chance anyway, pf09. You HAVE to win, and preferably by an impressive margin; otherwise, you’ll be exposed for what you are–a pretty strong team competing in a pretty weak FBS conference. I can understand the reluctance of many FBS teams to schedule FCS opponents; they risk potential embarrassment by losing to strong FCS teams (or even beating them, but only by a narrow margin), and if they schedule the weak ones (as UNC and others typically do), they’re accused, correctly, of scheduling “cupcakes.” It’s basically a no win situation for the FBS team. I think ECU is to be commended for scheduling a top level FCS team, if they were going to schedule one at all.
From our perspective, if we win it will be nice, something to trash talk about, mostly within the state. But whether we win or lose, the game won’t have any bearing on the remainder of our season, or on our hopes for a fourth title.
Comment by DRM 08.21.09 @ 10:24 amI sincerely hope that if we do win this game pf09, that you will come back around this way to take your commupance since you seem to love hanging around our board so much.

Comment by Jason 08.21.09 @ 11:52 amUsing AE in a set other than QB is interesting, but not on a ‘Gimpy’ foot ? He is not the Payton Award winner for playing WR. ECU may prepare for AE as a WR, which is a good decoy in itself.
Does APP have a new OC or different coaches on offense ? Game plan is key with new opponents.
