We can name this tune in three notes! Can you?
Pass the brats and pour us a mug! “La Montanara und Fujiyama! Berge sind überall schön!” /waves mug in the air
Behold the German Hi Hi Yikes. It’s Treue Bergvagabunden, by Germany’s very own Roy Orbison (though with Ed McMahon hair).
Actually, his name is Heino. And he’s quite the sensation in Germany. We have no idea if he composed the music, but the lyrics are credited to Adolf von Kleebsattel. And, in English, go a little something like this (hit it!)
La Montanara and Fujiyama,
Mountains are always beautiful,
Glacier and sun,
Hearts full of joy,
Great to see the stars!Wonderful mountains, sunny heights, mountain vagabonds are we, we
Wonderful mountains, sunny heights, mountain vagabonds are we
We have no idea what came first, this or Yikes. We’re just glad someone else didn’t use it first.
And it is catchy. And you can dance to it!
Always a-winning! Always a-grinning ! Always a-feeling fine! Go Vagabonds!
Even though this site is proprietary to Appfan, any and all future musical links should be reviewed with and approved–or not–by Naysayer before being posted. Bad (and juvenile) as our fight song is, thank heaven this isn’t it!
Comment by DRM 06.25.09 @ 11:42 amMust be June, cause it is slow for football.
Comment by strongwxnc 06.25.09 @ 1:54 pmBad and juvenile? The music and tune is great – the only fight song that has as good or better ring may be Wake Forest’s. Does anyone in the music dept know if the music was stolen from an old german drinking song, sort like our nation anthum?
Comment by brian 06.25.09 @ 2:03 pmBad and juvenile in terms of lyrics, absolutely. Exactly the same fight song used by my high school (aside from the fact that we were Eagles–perish the thought!–and not Mountaineers); the lyrics are much more apropos for a high school.
I agree that the music is fine, though it, and Wake’s song, pale in comparison to Michigan’s, USC’s (as in SoCal, not SoCar) and, as much as I hate to admit it, Notre Dame’s. But Notre Dame did, indeed, steal their music from Washington and Lee.
Comment by DRM 06.25.09 @ 2:12 pmDRM,
What exactly is bad and juvenile about the lyrics to our fight song?
Hi-Hi-y-ike-us
Nobody like us,
We are the mountaineers, mountaineers, mountaineers,
Always a-winning,
Always a-grinning,
Always a-feeling fine
You bet, hey!
They are definitely from a by-gone era but that’s what college tradition is all about. The main thing is that it’s OUR fight song and that’s why I like it more than Michigan, USC, et al.
It’s interesting that your high school has the same tune. Which came first?
Well, for one thing, the last two lines don’t rhyme with anything. And what the heck is an “ike-us?”
Doesn’t exactly shake down the thunder. And the German version sounds a lot like a waltz.
Comment by Appnaysayer 06.25.09 @ 3:45 pmActually our fight song was written by the German composer Falco. The original lyrics went something like:
“Don’t turn around, look, look, the Mountaineers are out and about! They’ll keep their eyes on you
and you know why.Your zest for life will kill you. Alles klar, Herr Kommissar?”
Jonmac, I’m sure ASU’s version–or ASTC’s, as it would have been then–came first. Most of the administrators and teachers at my school were App grads, and literally–except for the appropriate mascot name–the words were identical. For some time after enrolling at ASU I thought there was only one fight song for all schools, differing only by mascot name! (Actually, I wasn’t quite that naive–close, though.)
As to what’s wrong, there’s just no real substance (and little meaning) to the words. (This happens to be one of my opinions with which I agree.) But as you say, like it or hate it, the song is our tradition, and it would definitely be wrong to change it.
Comment by DRM 06.25.09 @ 4:23 pmBack in black
I hit the sack
I’ve been too long I’m glad to be back
Yes I’m, let loose
From the noose
That’s kept me hanging about
I keep looking at the sky
‘Cause it’s gettin’ me high
Forget the herse ’cause I’ll never die
I got nine lives
Cat’s eyes
Usin’ every one of them and running wild
That’s not our fight song?
Comment by clayton 06.25.09 @ 4:43 pmAppnaysayer, waltzes are in 3/4 time. This is either 2/4 or 4/4 time. (No, these aren’t fractions…they’re musical time signatures.
Comment by mtnrmom 06.25.09 @ 4:48 pmyou bet, hey…
Comment by appfantoo 06.25.09 @ 4:50 pmI’m with Clayton!
Comment by Dominick 06.25.09 @ 4:53 pmI just want a fight song that elevates to some kind of crescendo. Something that I would imagine the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble would compose, or a song that is similar in spirit in tone to Matthew Wilder’s “Ain’t Nothing Gonna Break a My Stride.” Listening to that song is like looking into the face of God.
Comment by Craig 06.25.09 @ 5:05 pmKnockin’ on Heaven’s Door?
Comment by DRM 06.25.09 @ 5:22 pmI don’t know Naysayer, why don’t you do some scholarly research and tell us all what an “ike-us” is. Not everything in the universe has to make perfect sense, nor does every song or poem have to contain rhyme, rythm maybe, but not rhyme, necessarily. It’s a college fight song for goodness sake and I don’t konw of too many people that sing along anyway, though I think we should. It may not “shake down the thunder” but it sure makes my butt leave the seat(if it hasn’t already) and my hands clap together everytime I hear it. The addition of the “Go, Fight, Win Apps” was the icing on the cake of a really good fight song, IMO.
Comment by jonmac 06.25.09 @ 5:56 pmWell, I like Clayton’s suggestion, but if we’re going with Dylan, then instead of Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, how about “Rainy Day Women 12 and 35?”
“You know I would not feel so all alone…everybody must get st–ed.” (metaphorically speaking, of course).
I’m not an NCSU fan, but I like their fight song because it insults their rivals, something like “Go over the hill, Caroline, Devils and Deacs stand in line….”
It’s just hard to find something that rhymes with Catamounts and/or Paladins, but I’ll lay down the gauntlet. I think Appfan ought to give one of those fancy Nike polos to the poster who can come up with some cool new lyrics to the melody of we already have. Not that we’re going to use the words, but hey, baseball season’s over and we’ve got more than a month until football practice.
And if you slip into 3/4 time or belch, I won’t tell.
Comment by Appnaysayer 06.25.09 @ 6:27 pmYou haven’t heard the new fight song????
Hi Hi y Ike-us
Nobody like-us
For every team we beat
Our Cobb steals another gold seat
More money he’s a winning
Prince keeps on a grinning
Always a feeling fine!!!
Catchy tune, but the lyrics do not exactly instill fear into our opponents. Often thought we needed another song to go along with it. Something modeled after “Fight On” from USC, the real one in Californis. Shoot, they’ve got a half dozen or so they play.
Comment by AppAttack 06.25.09 @ 9:54 pmYeah you’re right…the only ones that need fear are our loyal fans LOL!!!!
Comment by madapp 06.25.09 @ 10:12 pmWe have an awesome fight song.
Comment by clayton 06.26.09 @ 6:05 amI’d love to have a dollar for every time I’ve grabbed my drumsticks and played “Yikas” as a Marching Mountaineer or jumped to my feet and clapped along with our band an App fan. Our fight song is a celebration of touchdowns, field goals, victories, championships and who we are. GO MOUNTAINEERS!
Comment by mtnrmom 06.26.09 @ 8:54 amWhen I was at App, it was:
Chew tobacco, Chew Tobacco
Chew Tobacco, Spit!
If you ain’t a Mountaineer,
You ain’t Sh–

Comment by mtnrmom 06.26.09 @ 9:06 amCareful with those drumming fingers, ‘Mom!
Regarding Dylan, I wasn’t suggesting his music as a fight song. Just responding to Craig looking the deity in the face.
I agree with AppAttack–something similar to USC’s “Fight On” (or Michigan’s “Hail to the Victors”) would be a good adjunct to our traditional song.
Comment by DRM 06.26.09 @ 10:03 amMy understanding is the tune is an old, German folk song (German folk – ‘Bergvagabunden’ or mountain vagabond). Heino did a popular rendetion of it in the 70’s or so. Old song, App put to good use.
