Gone as quickly as he arrived

Uhhhhhhhhh ..... Remember that new WR coach from UCLA? Uhhh .. nevermind – “On Tuesday, Colorado State football coach Jim McElwain announced the hiring of … Alvis Whitted. Whitted arrived Monday ready to take over as wide receivers coach.” Also there? An old friend. But we know the real reason Whitted fled. Why, look who he’ll work with! “Said new quarterbacks coach Billy Napier, “I think we’ve got a great group of competitors here amongst the staff.” Today’s QB drill – Go for 2!!!

C.R.E.A.M. Dollah, dollah bills y’all.

Last season, CSU assistants averaged $123,777 with defensive coordinator Larry Kerr making the most at $200,000. Three assistants made less than $100,000. That no longer exists now.

Now, no assistant makes less than $135,000. The total money to be paid out to assistants is $1.345 million, an average of $168,000 per person.

Alvis Whitted is listed as making $135,000. According to public records, in 2011 Victor(y) Elder made $25,000 as wide receivers coach at App State.

So those saying they’d stay in Boone and be honorable and committed and upstanding and blah blah blah …… whatevahs /eyeroll

Derrick Black to coach DBs and Josh Jeffries to coach LBs. Oh wait thats Billys recurring nightmare…. that play never gets old by the way.

  • Jamey

WOW….how ridiculous do we look right now? Did we ever “officially” announce him as a coach or was it just speculation?

  • storminasu

You have to love the fact that Kent’s picture on their website has him in an Appalachian State shirt, haha.

  • Yogi86

Wonder if Jerry will try and hire Lonnie Galloway away from Wake Forest now?

  • Appy97,00

wouldn’t be able to pay a WR coach probably anything close to what an FBS school would…how many WR coaches has ASU had since 07? Galloway, guy from Alabama, another guy from Bama, Elder, Whitted….quite a revolving door of young coaches.

  • Gump

    Buzzed again!!!!!

  • hakeem nicks

    chant it with me……..BATICHON….

  • Jamey

Hans isn’t the only former ASU wide receiver with college-level coaching experience who has tried to get that job unsuccessfully. Maybe they are going to look outside the program again.

  • AppMan

Surely we could pay him more than Savannah State.

  • MIDWEST

This is a complete embarrassment to our program. When you’re hiring someone in business, you qualify them, qualify them, and qualify them again (even after the offer to make sure the hire sticks).

Bush league job by our staff. Not a good way for Satterfield to start.

  • mountainman

sources close to Galloway say he is wayyyyy to happy to leave WFU.

  • ASUGoose

Alvis is getting $130k at CSU…. I think it also helps that they are FBS that he decided to leave ASU.

Until we move up, we are going to see more and more of this unless for some reason we can pay our assistants a lot more than mid level FBS teams are willing to pay. (I don’t see that happening)

  • Rick

Wow. That’s $105k more than we paid Trey last year. (http://www.newsobserver.com/2011/02/24/1011452/university-employee-salaries.html?appSession=268270770173667) Don’t know wht we offered him, but its certainly understandable.

I don’t know what WTFU pays Lonnie, but I think its safe to say that we can’t come close. Plus Lonnie is VERY happy there. See him around town often. No way would could hire a position coach from a FBS school to coach the same position, regardless of the salary. Just the way it is.

Batichon would be a great choice. Wonder what Devon Fowlkes is up to these days? Troy Albea?

  • hapapp

How were we going to make sure the hire stuck? I seriously doubt we were within sniffing distance on $130,000. I don’t know how you blame our staff or Satterfield for this.

  • bcoach

If that is the way he opperates I am very, very happy he is gone. With that level of commitment I don’t want him near our guys.

  • crashcinema

While Whitted played in the NFL he was virtually unproven as a coach. Yes, he was the QC guy here in LA but putting together the video is a little different than teaching the fundamentals. Another question is why does Napier say, “look who he gets to work with?” Moore and Satterfield have 3 consecutive national titles. It wasn’t about who he was working with at all it was about $$$$$. This is not a first. Apps’ Basketball program has been a perpetual revolving door for years. Buzz jumped ship multiple times for money. In order to keep good coaches the University needs to step up and be financially competitive. We are just lucky we didn’t lose Coach Moore to Baylor years ago when they came calling.
I know Jerry and Scott will find the right individuals and finalize the staff.

  • dood

Ive heard that Hans is going to be working as a GA for Iowa next year. Its not confirmed just rumors at this point

  • Lewis

Smart man, got out before the season unfolded.

  • JMcCray

Put the c@#k back in your mouth Lewis.

  • asumountaineer2000

Lewis, this is disappointing news and your negative comments are equally disappointing. We are about to be at the top again and we will still be there without Elvis. He can go coach at an obscure fbs school for more money. We will announce a new wr coach soon, hopefully someone else who played with Jerry Rice in the NFL. Stay positive, satterfield is drafting a Playbook for jj and company right now. Can’t wait for ecu!

  • Appgrad

130k a year, FBS school. Yep, I would be gone to.

  • Jamey

Memphis has announced it is joining the Big East. Another spot open in Conference USA. Anyone else starting to this that high school coach in Georgia knew what he was talking about?

Lewis…your village called. They want their idiot back.

  • hapapp

The top candidate to take the OL job, Hiller from Ark State, has taken that position at Nevada. Looks like we have lost a second coach that seemed in the fold.

  • appfan83

Ladies and gentleman, ELVIS has left the building. Sorry guys an gals just couldn’t resisit.

  • appfantoo

Hate it but let’s be honest – not a single person on here can convince me they wouldn’t do the same thing if offered about $100k more to do the same job.

  • appthunder90

    jmccray

it is very unlike you to let lewis bait you like that. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt since he has pretty much mastered that trade…

  • MongolGuru

Conference USA is on life-support. Not sure I’d want to sign up for that.

  • appalachian95

Galloway not sure about why he would want to stay at Wake Forest except for the $$$$ the team has not done well the past 2 years, so why would you want to stay at a losing program instead of one that has a winning program since 1989?

It is about the $$$$ don’t let anyone fool you with that statement that it is all about the kids and the program, Jerry Moore is making enough money now that he does not need to go any where else and with retirement right around the corner I don’t blame him, look what he has accomplished at ASU since his arrival, I would want to retire to the mountains myself maybe not to Boone even though I love the town and all the surroundings, not that much to do in the area, but if you are retired why would you want to do that much anyway, play golf everyday, drink umbrella drinks at Linville Ridge, just kidding Jack Daniel for sure, what else could he want, I would say that he will be out the door in the next 5 years or less, when I played for him from 92-95 he talked about retiring in the mountains, we will see if he remains in the area after retirement, but that is down the road we need to win some more championships under his guidance!!

  • Fred

Who cares, he is gone and that’s that

  • JMcCray

You’re right, I apologize. I’ve been under a lot of stress, and just let the off hand comment bother me.

  • clayton

Trey Elder went to Western for less.

  • bcoach

    appfantoo
Believe what you want but there are many people, myself included who would not have left. It is called commitment and integrity. Maybe you leave next year or whenever your commitment is up but not 30 days later. See a coach is the guy who is asking the players for commitment. This man has none. His actions are another indication that he is not really a coach. He was a rookie trying to learn to be one. At this point he has failed. When he gets to that new place and starts asking his players for commitment what do you think will be going through their minds?
Again I hope we are going after coaches not just some guy with NO experience. Just because you have played the game does NOT make you a coach. One of the finest coaches of all time never played the game.

I am starting to worry that we don’t have confidence in our own program. Do we not think we can talk to the tons, of experienced coaches out there? Do we think we are only good enough to talk to video guys and grad assistants? At this point in time western has done better than we have.

  • bcoach

Put your guns away. I am not including Satterfield. I am considering him to be at the management level.

  • AppMan

Trey Elder didn’t want to leave.

  • sideline

    Then why did he?

  • Jack

Guy went to an FBS school for more money. This happens all the time. Not a big deal-it’s a business. The real story is Memphis going to the Big East. Let’s hope it opens up a spot for us in ConfUSA.

  • Jamey

    Then why did he?

Go read Brian Quick’s analysis of the coaching he received at ASU and I think you can find your answer. I didn’t say it this time, Quick did.

  • ASU-LAW

What do you expect when you take a QB who barely started at ASU and convert him to a WR coach?… That hire wasn’t really thought out… guess they were just trying to keep it in the Appalachian Family.

  • yesapp

Heard C-USA was looking to merge with Mountain West. Any truth to that?

  • bcoach

So I guess that puts us back to the lets hire coaches with experience that I have been talking about. bcoach and I have also been talking on here about the coaching that BQ did not get. So far we have made one solid hire and it is getting late. Big shot NFL guy who left is a big deal. He is not a coach and should stay away from students.

  • sideline

Here we go again. My butt is in the ringer. I was on his computer without changing sign in. AGAIN!

  • ASUGoose

I would have left for $100k+ more money. Especially if I was making $30k or less and he has no ties to App.

    You can’t blame the guy.

  • appfantoo

    bcoach/sideline – get real.

Coaching is a job. Just like in any business environment if someone calls you up and offers you an increase from $32,000 to $130,000 to work the same amount of hours doing the same basic task, you take it.

When are you going to stop posting as both bcoach and sideline? Do you need positive feedback so bad that you created another alias just to agree with yourself?

  • Rufus

Wu-tang reference, Appfan shows its range for references again. Well done.

  • sideline

Coaching is just another job and you run out the door in 30 days. Commitment means nothing. I feel bad for you. We happen to work in the same office. If I was looking for anything positive I would not be looking in your direction.

  • appthunder90

    mccray..

I think you may have missed the point of my comment. read it a couple of times. theres an unspoken punchline involved…..

  • Apps_Aj11

    He has mastered baiting. Funny.

  • bcoach

    90
Had to read it twice. Good job!

  • appthunder90

    i do what i can!

  • JMcCray

No, I saw what you did there. I just couldn’t come up with anything else to prolong the fun. The double entendre was masterfully played.

  • appdreamin

Thunder may have too much time on his hands during his internship.

  • Go Apps 72

It is imperative that the assistant men’s football coaches (and probably basketball as well) salaries are increased. It has been my observation that the real teaching, coaching, and mentoring is done at this level.

I heard that the YOSEF’s charter was changed last year that allowed at least some of their resources to go to assistant coaches. If that is the case, it would be reasonable.

Let’s run the table in men’s basketball through the Southern Conference tournament. Heck, let’s get the accompanying 15th seed.

  • Rick

In today’s economy, for anyone to call in a man’s integrity for taking a job making $130k instead of $32k, is just unrealistic. I’ve been in coaching for over 15 years and I have a close friend who made a committment for a coaching job at a FBS school, turned down an offer for more, and what it got him was the staff was canned the next year. In coaching, it is a mantra that you take it when you can, because it may only be 1 win or loss away from being gone.

Two things: 1) Coach Moore has turned down many jobs making much more money over the years. And it earned him a few ungratefuls that have called for his head and worse. Heck, some of you were already bashing Whitted saying that he was unqualified and not the direction that “App should be taking”. Why would he want to stay?

    2) For the record, my sources say that Whitted went to Moore and Cobb when he got the offer from CSU. Did not want to take it unless they knew. From what I heard, it was a very amiable, professional, yet unwelcomed, split. Its not like he pulled Irsay and left in the middle of the night.

  • bcoach

I understand what you are saying I just have a different outlook. I think looking for a better paying job is fine. What I don’t agree with is not sticking with the job for one season. If you are going to jump ship in 30 days how can you ask the players to give you a commitment. If they are wondering if you will be at practice tomorrow how do you ask them to give their all. They give a yearly commitment why shouldn’t the coaches. A whole seperate issue is walking out on the man that gave you your first real coaching job.

  • loveithere

footballscoop.com is reporting that we hired Gardner Webb RB Coach Chris Foster. He is well liked in this area and was well respected by people I know who have worked for/played for him. I do not know if this means that Stepp is moving over to WR or if he has left too.

  • hapapp

It was “reported” elsewhere that Stepp would move over to coach WR since Whitted went to Colorado State instead.

  • Dr. Gonzo

Those are both true. Apparently, it’s easier to find a RB coach than a WR. WE NEED TO GET THIS GUY
