Tipoff – Lil Sammy at App State

sighAnother game between two teams without a winning record – “App State trails UNCG by one game and Elon by a half-game in the SoCon North Division, while Samford sits a game back of the Mountaineers.” Meanwhile, the first-place bball team remains in first place, with a date at the Stink Saturday. Everything’s coming up App State.

U-G-L-Y. YOU AIN’T GOT NO ALIBI. 99 shots were put up in the air, 99 shots were put up! Count the 37 that went down, pass ‘em around, and ….. ewwww, you get two teams shooting a combined 37%. App alone was 20 of 52 overall, and 7 of 25(!) from 3-point range.

Apps lose by one, 53-52.

Smallest crowd I’ve ever seen at the HCC

  • ASU Dad

Is there something else going on? There is hardly anyone at the game. Disappointing.

  • Appftw

Well, it is samford. Probably the least appealing team in the conference from an App perspective. I’m heading to the game soon.

  • The Weasel

Absolutely no movement off the ball. No cuts toward the basket. Team just seems flat.

  • Brad

NO consistency at all…can’t get it going this year. So frustrating. Our leading scorer is Nathan Healy? Come on App…really?

  • crzyfrnk

can someone give me a score???

  • Dr. Gonzo

You’re damn right Healy was the leading scorer. The guy plays with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns.

We lost tonight because we shot like 30% from the floor. They just wouldn’t fall for us. A few terrible calls at key times didn’t help us either.

  • blackfan

UNCG wins again….7 in a row

  • App88

I go back to the game in Charlotte. They are not playing as a team. Too many new faces in one year. Matt McMahan should have gotten this gig. They would be more consistent!

  • clayton

    Basketball!

I’m not going to pretend like I’ve paid attention to the basketball threads (or college basketball in general) this year, but did you guys hear that Murray State is undefeated? Isn’t that where that one guy that people wanted to coach is? I know he’s not the head coach, but still.

Its like watching Gerald Wallace and Raymond Felton help the Trail Blazers beat the Bobcats by 44. Not really, I just think that is hilarious.

The team needs to work on their bounce passes.

  • Gwaltineer

Capel looks like he’s about to kill Randy Jackson.

My stepson, who is not really a basketball fan, made at least 3-4 comments that ASU was lazy and had no fire. That about mirrored my own observations.

If I had to categorize the weakness of the team this year, it would have to be that the guard play has been pedestrian at best. No where was it more evident than the Samford game. I saw high school guard play last night.

I like Coach Capel. From my basketball coaching experience, I will state that sometimes it is difficult to “fire” up the “fireless”.

Let us run the awesome Southern Conference basketball dynasty through the SoCon tournament.

I sure hope that all of you watch that video on the right. What a disgrace. NO RESPECT. Not one time did coach even glance in the direction of Randy Jackson. Randy was trying to engage coach and coach would not even acknowledge him. As far as I am concerned we can get rid of Capel ASAP. I would rather see his brother in here in a heart beat. At least his teams play with passion and pride. This ASU team has no passion or pride or discipline or anything else and it ALL comes from the man at the top. If that is how our coach is going to act in an interview with our own radio broadcast than we dont need him. If we lose a football game at least Jerry has the ability to engage Randy and be respectful. The way that Capel answered some of those questions with I dunno’s and its my fault’s was a disgrace to the basketball program, athletics program and this school. Get rid of him and get someone that cares about ASU and Boone in general.
I know these comments are harsh but he is lost. Doesnt deserve this job and his players are not being coached well at all.
    Thanks-

  • asuy

I agree 2008. That is horrible that he can’t even look at Randy. It is time for change! ;)

  • asu7

That last comment was by asu7. The y got in the way.

  • ASU-LAW

appfan2008 +1 for the observations about the video…but it may just be out of frustration. A coach shouldn’t be canned because he is frustrated… that may very well be a sign of passion.

I talked to Capel for a second after the game and it was clear he was mad. You can’t blame him after a performance like that.

  • Jamey

    Yup, basketball.

  • Appy97,00

Agree with the posters about the interview. But, quite frankly, Randy Jackson needs to tailor his tone and questions to the situation at hand. I probably wouldn’t want to look at him either if sounds like he’s blaming the coach and harping on the negative.

RJ should stick with being a weatherman. He’s not necessarily a sports guy.

After watching Coach Capel’s interview, I think it’s impossible to say that he doesn’t care. His obvious anger is proof that he does care. Will he find the answers to fix the problem(s)? That remains to be seen, but I think he will work to do so.

I rather like that he wasn’t warm and bubbly while “falling on his sword” for his team.

I was never a huge fan of choosing Capel for the HC position simply because he’s unlikely to be here longer than 3-4 years. But, he was the choice and deserves the chance to prove himself. One-and-a-half years isn’t long enough to judge a head coach. Next year at this time, we’ll have a much clearer picture of the direction of the program. If there is regression or no improvement, then talk of replacing him would be justified.

  • Dr. Gonzo

    appfan2008 = Randy Jackson.

  • Roachgone

PIT-TI-FUL!!!! And nobody really gives a rip.

  • cashworth1984

i’m sure when you are really upset the last thing you want to do is talk about it and get barraged with a bunch of questions. yeah he’s the coach and should expect it, but if he was giddy and happy and excited you all would be just as upset. he was thrust into this position because the previous coach dud peterson left us in a lurch and capel was the only good alternative in the short amount of time…also, who wants to coach basketball at app, it’s clearly a football school, and the socon is clearly a football conference. coaching bball at app is a stepping stone to another mid-major program

  • AppOrange

yeah, but he isn’t going anywhere but down with this team’s performace

Dear rallypoint10 – a quick Google search reveals shows that the person who “stumbled” upon the “insightful” and non-whitewashed piece is in fact the “writer” and editor of the fine “publication.” Do you limit your lying to anonymous message board posts, or does it carry over to your “work”? Also, quotation marks are punctuation, not a literary device. Other than that, it was a fantastic 1,200-word recitation of the play-by-play.

Capel is a good recruiter and will likely improve as a coach. However, I can’t understand only playing Butts 14 minutes. Despite playing less than half the time of most starters, he still had 8 rebounds. ASU would have won the rebounding battle by a significant margin had Butts played 25-30 minutes; and they may have also won the game. Vilarino seems to have potential as well, but never seems to be kept in long enough to let him get into the flow of the game.

  • Apps_Aj11

Wanting to fire the coach for not making eye contact with Randy Jackson after an abysmal basketball performance is literally one of the dumbest things I’ve seen posted here.

  • clayton

    bounce passes

  • Confused

Cobb interviewed the players and said they all wanted Capel.
What could have possibly gone wrong?

  • Ralph Wade

I,too, thought it was rather strange that Coach never looked at Randy several weeks ago….thought a comment would have been picky….guess not.

  • zdogman55-John

Guys, give Capel a break. In the video, you can tell he is seething (meaning, he cares), choosing his words carefully. Don’t read too much into not making eye contact with RJ. People have different ways of expressing themselves.

  • zdogman55-John

A good test of an athlete’s character (on any level) is how he or she deals with the adversity of being embarrassed on their home court. Let’s see how the guys rebound (pun intended), and what they have for CoC today. C’mon ‘neers!
