Great move, but a confusing one. Why would McMahon move to a 3rd different assistant’s position in 3 years, and why did he choose now to finally break ties with Buzz?
That being said, Murray State is always a contender in the OVC so he’s stepping into a nice program.

Way to go, Matt! You’ll be awesome! CONGRATS! Still missing you and the family up here on this mountain, though.
This positions Matt to be an assistant in a much more nationally visible program, probably a substantial pay increase, and should be a faster path to getting a head coach offer at some point down the road.
And, as a bonus, Buzz loses his best recruiter.
I’m pretty sure it’s a good idea to remove yourself from Buzz’s camp if one day you’re trying to convence an AD that you are a good long term fit for a program’s head coach.
The “Jerk” is Cobb. McMahon should be coaching App. McMahon had a resume, Capel did not.

Remember, Sims and another upcoming senior went to Cobb and told him they would rather have Capel… Take that as you will since I’m not 100% sure what was said, but the returning players wanted Capel over McMahon…
Great move for Matt though! Murray State is a traditional power in the OVC and constantly battles for a tourney spot!
I predict that App State has not seen the last the Matt McMahon. This was not a surprise though. Matt just couldn’t stay here, so he pretty much had to go to UNCW with Buzz.
Rick, I disagree. As long as Cobb is at App., I do not think that Matt will want to come back.
Also, I think that Matt is positioning himself for a higher profile job than App. by taking this position with Murray State. Murray State is one of those positions that seem to launch careers.

The players DID NOT ask for Capel. That was a spin put on it by Cobb/Mark Harrell to sell it to App fans. They weren’t necessarily against Capel, but they for sure weren’t against Matt. You may be closer to the program than 99% of the people on this board, but I’m probably in the 1%. Also, in the grand scheme of things, it would take a short sighted AD to take the guy that the players wanted, rather than whoever they thought would best fit the needs of the program in the long term, which was Matt McMahon IMO
It doesn’t matter who is right, because Cobb shouldn’t choose the players’ choice and he shouldn’t sell his choice as the players’ choice.

As far as Coach McMahon is concerned it would appear things have turned out for the better, in my opinion. Anyway good luck to him.
Why are we STILL talking about this? Glad Matt broke away from “Buzz of low character”. Quite frankly Matt was another Fancher and wasn’t ready for a HC job. Good guy no doubt but not the right guy to get us out of the doldrums. Cudos to Cobb et all for making a bold choice.
Matt is in good shape so support what we have or just be quiet and give Capel some room…like you did Fancher for a l l those years.

i was just thinking that it appears that we have the beginnings of a pissing contest.
Whatever happened happened. Capel is the coach for whatever reason people want to claim and that’s that. There’s no sense in pointing fingers when Capel has done some good things so far. Yeah he had a bumpy first year, but this year has potential as long as Omar can consistently put up numbers and were able to get a good inside outside offense.

I heard Cobb’s wife choose Capel over McMahon. Just like she choose the women’s soccer coach with No experience.
No telling who will be hired at App as long as the Cobbs are at the helm. No Experience Needed!

Giving Mark Harrill an award is just thanking him for allowing Cobb to spend his money. Harrill not only looks like a mole but he is a dumb a$$ for letting Cobb grab his johnson for cash.
Lewis, I saw the article. If I were a coach for Appalachian, I would be insulted for Cobb to say that Harrill mentored them….. If Harrill is mentoring any coach at App, Cobb hired the wrong coach. Also, what in the world in Harrill mentoring athletes for? Is he giving them money?
Listen you guys I know more about this program than 6.721% of the people in Italy and I am telling you that Coach Satterfield will be back next year to take over the basketball program and you can take that to the bank!! His wife will also hire the next baseball coach. Now listen real close because you will only hear this here. Coach Moore is going to retire this year and become the new Provost. I’mm telling you I have my finger on the pulse.

Not that my quick statement makes a difference for App St basketball however the gym is always packed against nationally ranked opponents. SoCon basketball has lost a lot of it’s luster over the years. I guess I will always be a Bobby Cremins supporter since he was the coach as App while I was a student.
Matt could have been the coach, BUT Buzz opened his mouth and said Matt was the best choice….to replace Buzz…..
AND we will alwaysstruggle in hoops as long as we are in the SoCon…..It may be the worst basketball conference in the country…….

Don’t believe everything you hear, especially when it comes out of Cobb’s mouth. Those players did go to Cobb but it was to endorse Matt for the job. Each one of them told Cobb IF the decision was made to stay with someone on the staff “Coach Mac” was their preference. That was somewhat of a problem for Cobb because when the news broke about Buzz talking to Marshall Harrill told Cobb to find a way make Capel the next coach.
Cobb distorted the story to support the decision because he knew there was no possible way to justify the move. Since he is now graduated I don’t have a problem telling the world Donald Sims said the players were shocked when Cobb made those remarks during the press conference. It was a complete fabrication.
The ASU basketball program is a joke and you can thank Cobb. He has no choice but to do Harrill’s bidding since his big donations to the athletic campaign are necessary to fund Cobb’s excessive spending on the new facilities.
Mr Harrill has gone to great lengths to take over the program even to the point of having a plaque placed on Capel’s office that reads “The Mark Harrill Family Head Men’s Basketball Coach’s Office.” The people in Boone know what has been going on and the program is seen as a joke.
Since he arrived in Boone Capel has lived free of charge in one of Harrill’s Echota condos. Does it come as a suprise Capel took a personal interest in Harrill’s son (who plays basketball at Watauga HS) giving him hours of private coaching lessons and attending many of his games?
You may also be interested to know Buzz, Matt, and Jamie took a domestic flight to the 2010 Final Four as a staff while Harrill, Cobb and Capel flew out the next day on Mark’s private plane.
Time to take off the blinders and face the truth.
