Elon pulls out the big gun

New coach. New quarterback. New season. No problem.

Not when you got Ray Lewis in your lockerroom!

Wait .. What?

The question is … how much time are we wasting? I just came out the gym for three hours this morning. I got five hours of sleep. That’s it. Every. Day. Of My Life. I’m trying to find a different way to get better. Coach didn’t tell me to do this. Remember we in a lockout. So I ain’t training for football. I’m training for a lifestyle.

Whoa. Hard core.

Great speech. The burning birds heard a great talk. But can they walk it?

LINE OF THE DAY. HA! – “I figure I’ll beat the App fans to the punchline and ask did anyone dive at his knees on his way out?”

HOW DID LEWIS GET THERE? Uhhhhh … serendipity?

Elon coach Jason Swepson said Lewis was in the area tending to business following a function Friday night at North Carolina A&T.

Swepson said the NFL star had sent word through one of his representatives that he would be interested in stopping by and meeting the Phoenix.

“It was great timing,” Swepson said. “We’re just appreciative. He took some time and talked to the team and I’m sure these guys will never forget that.”

Was anyone murdered in Elon today? Round up Ray and his posse…. err, I mean his posse.

why was he there? Internet “reports” never say…

Not concerned about what loser Elon does but very concerned that App is not on anyone’s list for an invite to move to FBS. App has done everything needed to move up but there doesn’t seem to be interest from a FBS conference. We seem destined to play SoCon ball forever along with Presbyterian, Coastal and Elon.

  • Dan

This “we’ve done everything needed” attitude is interesting. You know what we haven’t done? Moved the school into a larger TV market. FBS doesn’t care if you’re competitive, they care how much $ you bring.

  • AIG

Nothing we can do about the location Dan. So what you are saying is we have reached the pinnacle and there’s no where left to go but down. Depressing

  • Dan

We absolutely can do something about location! Sports franchises are relocated all the time for money! Why not relocate the entire school so we can get into the Big 10 (or 12 or whatever the hell it is now)?!

That is a pessimistic view point you have though, we could always win a few more national titles…

  • Boone Goon

    “champion on three!” …APP STATE!!

Theyre going to need more than Ray Lewis…the Pope…

  • LL22

That was inspiring…that’s why Ray Lewis is respected the way he is.

  • Rick

We cant move the school, but we can pull more football TV points in the triad and Charlotte metro than any other college team outside of Carolina, maybe State. Could probably beat em in the Triad. Who else they gonna watch? Charlotte Community College? Ag & Tech? The Deacon Blues? (nod to Steely Dan)

  • AB

The answer to the question is about 8 minutes.

Elon will never again beat App State in Football. Elon has not beaten App St in Football since 1964. App St has beaten Elon 16 straight times. The streak is starting to be pathetic. Elon has never beat App St as long as its been a member of Division I football. Before 1971 App St was in the NAIA. Also, Elon is running out of time. App St will soon move up to the FBS and in turn leave the SoCon. Yes, I do believe Elon could be a future FCS game when we are a true FBS team. App St will get more scholarships when they more the FBS. If Elon thinks its hard to beat App St now, just wait till they play us as a FBS. Once again, Elon will never again beat App St in football.

Why did I just buy a case of Old Spice?

  • AppState07

    Very classy move.

I like Ray Lewis but he went down on my list a few places after this.

  • SpeedkingATL

Ray Lewis still hasn’t answered a lot of the questions surrounding his potential involvement in a murder in Atlanta during the Superbowl a few years back. If the prosecutor hadn’t rushed to trial to get TV facetime Ray might not be playing at all.

  • herbstreitsucks

Do they teach ebonics at Elon now? Maybe that is why he was there.

  • MIDWEST

I was in the ATL when the Lewis incident happened and I can tell you…he killed someone. Love the guy as a football player (one of my favorites as no one brings it like he does),but having an unapologetic murderer speak to an academic institution is just wrong.

Just talked to an insider with UCF alumni and he says they are making a play for the ACC and the Big East is a fall back. Interesting and probably wishful thinking but I think they are a shoe in for the Big East if they want it.

  • Dr. Gonzo

Ok I just actually watched the video. Did anyone notice the lightning strike right when he says god?

Did Ray Lewis do this to Jason Hunter? It’s all coming together now…

    NOMAD,

I don’t care much about the birther issue. His policies and terrible leadership are my issues. Besides, digital technology enables anyone to recreate any document. It also appears that king O is afraid of Trump and Ron Paul.

Believe it or not. Lived in Buckhead and was out at the bars the night it went down…two blocks away.

  • AIG

MTD I wish I could share your optimism but with no interest from a conference we can’t go anywhere and are going to be stuck in the SoCon and a day when Elon has a shot

  • MIDWEST

Gwalt- I was on my phone earlier, but here’s what the UCF alum said exactly when I asked him if he thought UCF would join the big East:

“Well, I know a lot of people think that, but before we settle for the Big East, we’re going to make a run at the ACC or SEC. We have more resources than many of those schools do already…higher enrollments, bigger TV market, Disney/corporate support, etc.”

My response: “SEC…really?” He didn’t like that reaction too much. I was nice enough not to refer to UCF as OCC (Orlando Community College).

  • clayton

When listening to an alumnus from another school discuss their school’s status in college sports, this is what you should think to yourself:

“Self. Do any Appalachian alums ever make ridiculous claims regarding possible scenarios related to our athletics department? Could it be possible for alumni from other schools to make outlandish statements? What’s that grain of salt over there? Maybe I should take it.”

  • asu7

I do not see UCF in the ACC or SEC. I do see them in the Big East because the market would be huge for the Big East. If this happens our dream might come true of getting into the CUSA.

  • midwest

I do think the ACC would love to have the orlando market…academics aren’t strong enough. I hope we join cusa before they leave. GREAT family road trip.

  • Crew

We are not at the top of CUSA’s list if they need a team. There are 3 other teams that the conference will make a run at before us.

  • AIG

Right Crew, our chances are slim to none.

  • MIDWEST

asu7- One could argue that Big East teams have better markets than the ACC (depends on your definition). When last I checked, the New York/NJ/Conn market is bigger than all of the ACC combined (Rutgers, UConn, Syracuse). Throw in the cities of Pittsburg, Cincy, and Tampa and the Big East dominates the ACC in terms of market. Add Philly (Nova) and Orlando (UCF) and the ACC looks like a league of hicks.

Clemson? Maryland? Virginia? Wake? Give me a break. The ACC sucks in so many ways.

  • MIDWEST

    AIG- you’ll see.

  • AIG

Midwest I hope so. This is quite the roller coaster ride.

  • Crew

Why do some posters on here hate the ACC so much? I could only wish for App to be part of the ACC; I hope for that more than the crappy Sunbelt and the crappy CUSA.

  • clayton

The ACC makes more money than the Big East. Market size doesn’t matter if nobody is watching.

  • MIDWEST

Crew- I hate the ACC because many people from NC love the ACC. The point is that the ACC has a weak national presence. They think they’re some national powerhouse, but people on the West Coast think of them as the CAA (with the exception of Tarhole/Dook hoops and FSU/Miami football)

Clayton- you’re right, which is why I said it depends on what you mean by market.

Don’t underestimate the upside of the Big East. At some point, these schools with 50k+students will have a massive alumni base. With a student population 3x greater than App, it won’t take long for htem to have a multitude of fans.

  • Maxhr230

Why do we give a sh#$ what anybody on the west coast thinks about the ACC, SOCON or the east?

The ACC is an outstanding conference, so is the CAA and our very on SOCON.

I have sons at App and UNC, and I attend App.

Trust me a degree from UNC knocks doors down anywhere in the US whereas one from App can open some doors. I know from living it.

  • MIDWEST

    Whatever…Acc is weak.

  • Maxhr230

Midwest you are a disservice to Appalachian State University!

  • Gwaltineer

Your friend at UCF is probably their version of you.

  • AIG

    Personal attacks are uncalled for.

  • appthunder90

that has never stopped them from coming on this site

  • Gwaltineer

they are uncalled for unless they are called for.

  • MIDWEST

Stop worshipping the tarholes and the acc and be a real App fan…this is a blog

  • sku

if JZ cant be in the UK locker room after a basketball game ($50,000 fine),how can Ray Lewis be alloud in the ELON locker room?

  • carbine

‘Cause he’ll cut ya if ya trys to stop ‘em! He’ll cut ya good!

  • Crew

I don’t hate the ACC. I like the football and love the basketball. Basketball is down right now.

As far as football, I love Big10 football.

There are 3 teams ahead of us if CUSA needs teams from what I have learned through reading and discussion (of course, this is speculation). So, CUSA doesn’t want us and maybe the SunBelt doesn’t want us either. We have no place to go.

Sku- good question. The only thing that I can think of is that JayZ is a part owner of a franchise, while Ray Lewis isn’t.

  • Crew

    Let me clarify one thing.

I love the basketball in the ACC, except when Carolina and Duke get all of the bogus calls from the refs! I am tired of the refs helping those two teams.

  • Gwaltineer

I may regret asking, but what teams are ahead of us for C-USA from what you are seeing?

  • MIDWEST

WE ARE THE NEXT CUSA TEAM.

  • Crew

Middle Tennessee, Troy, and Temple – in that order.

Unfortunately, App State doesn’t bring anything to the table when regarding ‘money value’, such as a tv market, etc.

I believe that we bring lots of things to the table, helping CUSA make more money isn’t one of them.

  • Dan

It’s like if he yells it, it must be true.

If we end up staying FCS, I look forward to Midwest’s Cartman-esq string of “if you’re going to f–k me, at least buy me dinner first” statements.

  • appthunder90

if we stay fcs, i will humbly accept that the decision was made based on better information than i am capable of obtaining, and continue to be the biggest supporter of asu on the home side of the stands!

  • AIG

We’re going to have to go crawling back to the SoCon because nobody else wants us.

  • sideline

Was that a killer speach? or just a speach by a killer?
