That’s always fun – “Frazier, a sparsely used strong safety, has found a new opportunity. He moved to offense a little more than a week ago as an H-back — a hybrid fullback and tight end — and is now working at running back, too. “He’s going to get on the field,” Moore said. “He’s going to help us.””

UMass hasn’t beaten a I-A since 1984. Yet there’s NO! DOUBT! it’s ready for big boy play! – “Just ask the 110,000 Michigan fans, who saw UMass almost pull off the App State-sized upset at the Big House last fall. They’ll tell you UMass is, indeed, ready to take the bumpers out of the alley and go bowling in the FBS.” Richmond, New Hampshire, Delaware and Rhode Island fans couldn’t be reached for comment. . . . → Read More: Almost now counts in horseshoes, grenades and FCS

App State is 10-11 overall, but 1-8 in SoCon. Non-league foes good! League foes bad! So that makes a 3-game series at home with Cornell promising! First pitch today at 3, with 2 pm starts Friday and Saturday. Tuesday’s 9-5 win over UNC-Asheville was the first come-from-behind win of the season.

Golfer of the week – “Xu led wire-to-wire to claim the Low Country Intercollegiate title by five strokes this week, giving the 2010 SoCon champion her second career tournament win. The Mountaineers claimed their first team championship since 2004 with a nine-stroke victory over Samford.” This comes after “Sophomore Josh Nichols team tied a program record and set a course mark with a 65 on March 14.”

So says …. App State? – “Judkin Browning, a professor of military history at App State, says, “Would I consider us ‘at war’ with Libya at this moment? I would say no, simply because of the very limited nature of our military mission.” That’s right! This ain’t a war, it’s a … /puts on glasses, reads notes … “kinetic military action.” That’s totally unlike the unpleasantness of that unilateral cowboy a few years ago. . . . → Read More: Incoming – It’s official. This is not a war

Stupid – “The Iowa football program should drop an “intense, high-volume squat-lifting workout” that led to the hospitalization of 13 players. The strength and conditioning coaches did not know about rhabdomyolysis. The report cleared all football players, coaches, physicians and trainers from any wrongdoing.” Ignorance is a defense! You know what would have been different if a player had died? Nothing.

Hugs and kisses – “I’m just glad I have an unlimited text and phone plan, or I’d be in a world of hurt right now,” Fancher said. “It’s been non-stop from everybody and their grandmother since word got out. It’s unique.” His first act? Meeting with his players. “I’m going to be here for these guys.”

Makes us proud to be Mountaineers.
The group is Wine to Water.
A week ago, a group of eight Appalachian State University students returned from visiting our water projects in Peru with our partner on the ground, Inca Link. Over the next week, we’ll be sharing some of their favorite stories and experiences on the trip. Our first post comes from Katy Cook, who has been volunteering with Wine to Water since she was in high school:

App State is bringing some 3-4 goodness to its defensive scheme.
Why, one may ask?
Cause all the cool kids are doing it.
Meet the spread’s doppelgänger.
A year after the spread offense took the college football world by storm, the 3-4 defense is now the fashionable trend.
The 3-4 defense, more so than the 4-3, creates confusion and chaos for those very spread offenses that were so en vogue last summer.

Guess which league had a pretty good opening weekend in the NCAAs?
/deep sigh
Yeah, them.
And you know what makes that news worse. Us.
In bball, the SoCon SoCan’t.
It’s easy to see why when Wofford, one of the smallest Division I schools in the country, has won back-to-back SoCon tournament titles and gone one-and-done in the Big Dance twice in a row.
So, the current darling of the SoCon is Appalachian State’s football team.

Rocky at the top – “Bruce Pearl’s tenure at Tennessee is over. Sources say that former Appalachian State head coach Houston Fancher, the team’s coordinator of video scouting, is expected to take the reigns as the interim coach until a permanent replacement is hired.” Good for him.
NO CLUE. One comment from Fancher today – “”Nobody has told me that,” Fancher told The Knoxville News Sentinel. “I think that’s just the scuttlebutt out there. If that does . . . → Read More: Another former App coach taking over at UT

Baby steps – “War-hero-turned-football-star Brian Stokes will be the subject of a feature from NFL Hall-of-Famer Dan Marino, Brian Hyland, Doodle Films and Scarpe Diem Prods.” Hired to write the script is Joel Silverman, who’s previous work includes .. um … ooo-kay … and, uh, wow. As for the subject himself, he’s part of the long, huge, thick arm of the G’boro law.
