App State at home against a struggling opponent with an awful record and low expectations.
Wanna guess how that turned out?
Ugh.
Junior Aaron Brackett had career highs of 28 points and 15 rebounds Thursday night as UNCG held on for its first victory of the basketball season, beating Appalachian State 75-74 at the Holmes Center.
Worse than the final score is how the second half was played.
App State led 41-28 at halftime. Then the team with two of the biggets guns in the SoCon went almost dead silent. Only three points – 3! – in the first four minutes of the final half.
FOUR MINUTES!
The SPA!-tuns didn’t take the lead until 8:13 mark, 61-59. At one point they went up by 5.
But App State fought back. It was a one-point game with 30 seconds to go. There were opportunities to get the win. But alas …
On the ensuing possession, Carter drove hard to the rim with 12 seconds left, but David Williams blocked the shot and forced a jump ball. With the possession arrow in Appalachian’s favor, the Mountaineers inbounded the ball and Carter missed a jumper with eight seconds remaining as Brackett hauled down his 15th rebound and was fouled.
Depressing. Only one thing can remotely cheer us up. How’s BidiBidi reporting the game?
Long story short, the Mountaineers just couldn’t pull off an upset.
Ugh.
Next up, at the ‘Whee Saturday at 2.
Somehow, this doesn’t come as a surprise. For several years, App basketball has been pretty good at losing the games we should, on paper, definitely win.
Gah I hope we beat Western.
What is there to say? Everything old is new again when it comes to Appalachian State basketball. I try to laugh because it beats crying.
O U C H to the 10th power
0-15, we felt sorry for them because we do have a few wins and they didn’t have any.
Terrible game all around… sloppy play, and s***** defense…
Exact reason I don’t drive up the mountain to a BB game!! Will someone please call UNC Wilmington and ask for Matt!!!!!!!!
Very inconsistent team, similar to last season. I remember bragging on the team to get people to come to the socon title game in charlotte and they stunk it up. I remember one specific instance when Butts missed an open lay up. 6 foot 10 and laying the ball up. hopefully with his surgery and the loss of some weight we can finally see him dunk. Complimented with a 7 footer next year and we should have some size. Like my high school coach always preached basketball is a game of runs. Its how long you let their run last, and how you respond when their run is over. Hope things get better
King College just called. They want a rematch at their place this time.
A real mediocre effort. Not enough energy; got beaten on the offensive boards, though the rebounding overall was fairly even. Sims missed two free throws, Williamson at least that many, any one of which, it turns out would have made the outcome closer. Brackett for UNC-G kept getting open for a foul-line “jumper” that we could not seem to defend. Just got out-hustled and out-worked by a team that cannot compare with us in talent.
ASU was “flat” all night, but a surge at the end of the first half when Sims hit a 3 at the buzzer seemed to convince us that we had it won. From then on, it was a classic “upset,” the underdog allowed to hang around, gain confidence, and win it at the end.
Breeze was nowhere in sight. Illness was the official explanation I heard. His absence hurt a lot. We have no inside game as it is and need anyone who can bang the boards every night.
Better get the ship righted against WCU and Elon because the schedule gets much tougher after that. I think we’re about to learn a lot about our new coach.
I’m always amazed when players have a lack of effort, and talk about not being motivated for the game. Hey guy’s you are here on a scholarship to play basketball which should be a game you love to play. How can you not be motivated to play at what is most likely the highest level they will get a chance to play at?
Waco – good question. This generation (not everyone, as a whole) is all about passing the buck. When they don’t play well, they blame the coach because they were not motivated. Oh well…231 days.
The program has had a lot of change (3 head coaches in 3 years) without a lot of change (2 assistants to ___ and 1 ____).
Seems lazy.
And old people pass a lot of bucks.
Not enough…as I always seem to be a little short at the end of the month.
is anthony thomas on the team…??
his tweet after the game said “4letters uncg” what does that mean?
Anthony Thomas was dressed out. Did not play. What’s up with him and Breeze?
Thomas is suspended and should be back soon. Breeze is sick…
It really does take a lot to get App fans really pissed at our basketball coach. You either have to pull a Buzz, or lose to 0-15 UNCG and WCU in a 3 day span.
What is Thomas suspended for?
No tweeting if I were the coach.
We are really missing a big man in our offence and we need to develop and inside and outside game. Did you notice the size of the UNCG players? They have some size and depth. Finally they pulled one out. They have played well at spurts and they finally put it together. Let’s don’t get down. All the team in the SoCon are pretty good. go apps!
1-15, 5-13, 4-15 ain’t considered pretty good.
