Habits – “The Spartans produced yet another turnaround, rallying from a 17-point deficit to knock off App State 77-73 in OT. It was the fifth straight victory for the Spartans, now 7-14 and 5-4 in SoCon play. ASU laid the foundation for what could have been a road-game windfall by rolling to a 30-13 lead in the first half.” Sounds kinda familiar, doesn’t it? /deep sigh
Welcome – “Nine-year National Football League veteran Alvis Whitted and former Mountaineer tight end Nic Cardwell have joined Appalachian State University’s football staff as wide receivers and tight ends coach, respectively, head coach Jerry Moore announced on Wednesday. Whitted comes to ASU after a year as an offensive assistant at UCLA.”
App State freshman Maryah Sydnor has been named the SoCon Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played Jan. 18-23.
Sydnor tied her career-high of 20 points in Monday’s 53-49 win over the Samford Bulldogs. The Radford, Va. native, who finished a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe, also had seven rebounds, three steals and two assists against the Bulldogs.
The freshman forward scored a team-leading 16 points on Saturday in ASU’s 62-51 over Chattanooga. Sydnor dished out three assists and had four rebounds, and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
Panned – “Brian Quick had a rough day. He is built just like Plaxico Burress and he has good get-off speed, but his hands appear slow. What I mean by that is that the ball gets into his pads quickly and if the throw is at his torso he has no prayer of getting his long arms out fast enough to catch it. The one ball all day that Kellen Moore really rifled hit Quick between the numbers while Quick’s arms were still extending out to get it.” Coincidentally, a “Mike” Quick, also apparently from App State, “struggled and looked outclassed.”
Quick, who’s playing for the North team, repeatedly got open using his speed and fluid route running. Also, at 6-foot, 3 1/2 inches tall, he towers over most defensive backs. He interviewed with the Falcons on Monday night.
“The No. 1 guy that has stood out from a small school has been Brian Quick from Appalachian State,” nfl.com draft analyst Bucky Brooks said. “He’s created a buzz because people want to see a guy with his size and athleticism playing outside.”
App State beat the ‘Whee Saturday in front of the largest Jones Arena crowd in a couple of seasons. There was drama – “Harouna Mutombo’s driving layup with 6:20 left (capped) a 15-3 run and tying the score at 59. Back-to-back plays by Jamaal Trice put the Mountaineers back in control in front of a crowd of 3,476.” There was comedy. Some of the ‘Whee starters forgot their jerseys(!). Responsible benchsitters gave up theirs for practice jerseys. Universtiy pride!!
Oops – “SoCon commissioner John Iamarino said his league is taking a wait-and-see attitude about the UNC Asheville-Big South Conference scheduling conflict. The conflict centers on March 3, when the SoCon women have four games scheduled from noon-8:30 p.m. in Kimmel. That date is also the championship game for the BSC men’s tournament, with a noon start. The BSC tourney format calls for the title game to be played at the site of the higher seed, and the Bulldogs are in first place.”
Promises – “He committed to Appalachian State this morning,” said Todd Wofford, Central Gwinnett’s coach. “They are moving to Conference USA in two seasons, and he wanted to be a part of that. He loves their facilities, the guys on the team and the stadium. He likes how they spread the ball out and says he can come in a make an immediate impact.”
FACT – Not one team in the SoCon’s North has a winning record, overall or in conference. Really. It’s true. Here’s how it sounds. Today the first-place ‘Whee-Cats bring their 9-10 overall, 3-3 SoCon records to Boone to face App State’s 7-10, 3-4 marks. How inflated could the ‘Whee’s egos be? Dude. Here’s your preview. Men’s game first of a doubleheader, as women take on ‘Nooga at 6 in a huge game. Mocs lead league at perfect 8-0, 13-4 overall. Third-place Mountaineers are 6-1, 12-3. Give ‘em hell!

Uh-oh – “The University of Montana has been investigating at least five sexual assault cases that occurred on and off campus. At least two of the cases involve football players, and one of them was an alleged gang rape. Incidents suggest a disturbing pattern of normal underreporting the crime, combined with poor handling by university officials and special treatment for football players.” Dude. Montana at The Rock September 8.
